Returning Practical Tasks
Making a Short Film and Film Review
The pointWhen completing your Year 13 coursework you
will have to use more than one medium so you need to be comfortable working in moving image and print.
This unit of work is designed to improve your film making skills.
You are going to produce a short film from a choice of briefs and record the process on your blog.
Remember, the quality of the films you make depends on you, not the briefs or the equipment.
The film taskYour film is to be about 30 seconds to 1
minute in length. At least three people must appear in each
film. There needs to be at least six separate shots. There will be no more than 4 people in each
group. You will need to produce an animatic (moving
storyboard) and, if appropriate, a written script per group. These should appear on your blog.
Brief 1 of 4One Perspective
Film the whole sequence from one person’s point of view. You will not see that person. The other characters are not aware they are being watched. You need to use at least two different locations.
Brief 2 of 4The Quiet Task
A task is completed during the sequence. The only words used as ‘yes’ and ‘no’. Use at least one pan and one low angle shot. Use only one location.
Brief 3 of 4The Chase
Film a chase sequence. At least one character is caught. Include a tracking shot.
Brief 4 of 4
The Test
Two or more characters are doing a test. It does not have to be an exam, though it can’t be dangerous. Use at least two close ups to show emotions.
Post productionYou will download your work into iMovie in
order to edit it.You must include a title page and credits
in appropriate places. You will create an appropriate soundtrack
or sound effects using Garageband.Your work will be saved onto DVD as well
as Quicktime to enable you to upload it to your blog.
The print briefYou are to create a page (or double page
spread if you feel adventurous!) for an appropriate magazine to review the film you have created.
You must include a minimum of two original images per person to the review.
The style and content of the review are entirely up to you, but you need to show an understanding of the conventions of a film review and the design and layout of a magazine page.
The print brief contd.
Again you should record the process of development on your blog.
This should include your original images, draft layouts, draft copy of your article/review.
Your work will be printed out and displayed in the department. It should also be uploaded to your blog.
