Quality vs. Quantity
Short Story: (noun) A short piece of prose fiction, having few characters and aiming at unity of effect . -The American Heritage Dictionary
What is a Short Story?
Quality vs. Quantity
"Much of teachers' insistence that students read innumerable books in one semester derives from a misunderstanding we sometimes have about reading. Insistence on a quantity of reading without internalization of texts proposed for understanding rather than mechanical memorization reveals a magical view of the written word, a view that must be superseded." -Paulo Freire (1987)
In other words…
Quality of text is much better than quantity when teaching reading.
The Debate
Short Stories can be used to…•Boost confidence of reluctant readers who do not read large texts
•Teach most, if not all, aspects of reading
•Expose students to many genres, styles, and authors in a shorter amount of time.
Short Stories are also…•More accessible
• Easy to obtain multiple copies for shared/guided reading
•A great guide for writing techniques
Why Use Short Stories?
Short Stories vs. Novels
Novels are great learning tools. However, if needed some classic novels have short story substitutes that will teach the same topics. Hey! They even have the same author as well!
