I absolutely love that they have a Teacher of the Year recognition once a year. They pointed out each teacher, where they taught, and what students or principals have said about them. You could see the excitement and satisfaction on each of the teachers faces. It was awesome to see.

- There were about 30-40 teachers that were present.

Richardson brought up a revised version of the Annual Plan to apply federal funds to support Special Education Programs

- The plan is different due to a decrease in federal grant and an increase in compensation and benefits to personnel covered in the grant. Activities that were once covered by federal money are now covered by local money

*A request will be made to approve this in the first School Board meeting in May

- Each of the school board member had their

opportunity to comment on the teachers of

the year.

- Dawn Shelly brought up an issue dealing

with social media comments made from

parents, teachers and students on the

pressure of SOL’s. She calmly cleared up

some misunderstandings and stated that if

there are questions or negative comments,

they should be directly vocalized to her.

Mrs. Shelley: Spending in the School Board Office: She is asking for a motion to have an audit to audit the expenses of the School Board members and Superintendents for travel expenses for the past 10 yrs.

None of the Board members seemed to agree with her

Gilbert Seaux was blunt in saying that he thought Shelley was speaking of his actions in the past, which he defended and did not approve of the motion

Blalock pushed the motion for a future meeting dealing with this issue specifically

The meeting was then moved to a closed meeting

“School-board members tend to be older than the

general population(54% over 50 yrs old); more

educated(67% have had 4 yrs or more yrs of

college); and wealthier(50% earn more than

$75,000 annually). They are more likely to be

professionals or businesspeople . Almost all, 96 %, of

school-board members are parents, and 48 % have

children currently enrolled in school”(Ornstein,

Levine, Gutek & Vocke, 2011).

** This is a very comforting statistic!
