The history of St. Valentine’s Day

In ancient Rome, February 14th was a holiday to honour Juno, the Queen of the Roman Gods and Goddesses, and also the Goddess of women and marriage.

Young boys and girls lived strictly separated until the festival of Lupercalia, which began on the following day, February 15th. But on the eve of the festival of Lupercalia the names of Roman girls were written on slips of paper and put into a box.

Each young man took a slip of paper from the box, and the girl with that name and the boy were partners for the duration of the festival.

Sometimes they were a couple for an entire year, and often, they fell in love and married later.

St. Valentine’s StorySt. Valentine’s Story

My name is Valentine. I lived in Rome during the 3rd century, under emperor Claudius. Claudius wanted to have a big army, but married men did not want to leave their wives and families to fight in wars. So Claudius decided not to permit any more marriages. I was a priest and one of my favourite activities was to marry couples, so I continued celebrating marriage ceremonies -- secretly, of course. One night, they caught me, put me in prison and sentenced me to death. But many young people came to visit me, throwing flowers and notes up to my window. One of these young people was the daughter of the prison guard. Her father let her visit me, and we sat and talked for hours. When I was to die, on February 14, 269 A.D., I wrote a little note for my friend thanking her for her friendship and loyalty. I signed it, "Love from your Valentine."That note started the tradition of exchanging love messages on Valentine's Day.
