Behaviour: Aggregate of all the responses made by individuals
Methods to study human behaviour :
Introspection Method Observation Method Experimental Method Case Study Method Survey Method Genetic Method
Introspection Method
• A self-observation method to express inner feelings• The word introspection means ‘to look within’
Demerits• Can’t verify the reports given by the observer• Not applicable for children and mentally disordered
persons
Observation Method
• Observation is made in their natural environment by trained persons
• Studies children, mentally ill and unconscious patients
Demerits• Chances of subjective report• It is an time expensive method
Experimental Method• A multi-step and most objective method to study
behaviour• Effect of independent variable on the dependent
variables are studied under the control of extraneous variable
Demerits
• Can’t be conducted outside laboratory
• Confounding Variables and Placebo Effect• Very expensive and time consuming
Case Study Method
• Detailed information collected & interpreted• Widely used in clinical and educational settings for
investigation and exploratory research
Demerits• Can’t generalize the results to the wider population• Researchers' own subjective feeling may influence
Survey Method
• Gathers information from large number of people• Ease of analysis & graphical representation
Demerits• Difficult to handle specialised cases• Requires too much time and manpower
Genetic Method
• Makes use of the results from earlier stages of life and various heredity related issues
• Involves cross-sectional study and longitudinal study
Demerits• No experimental verification• Doesn’t work well in mutation
