Measuring light
Image is ‘correctly’ exposed
Image is over exposed - you need less light
Image is under exposed - you need more light
Where are you measuring?
Spot metering only measures the intensity of light over a small circular area around the autofocus point currently being used. The average is calculated by measuring just 2-4% of the picture area (depending on your camera model). Not all cameras offer spot metering
Most DSLRs offer this metering mode. It measures the intensity of light over a larger circular area than in Spot mode. The average is calculated by measuring 8-13% of the picture area (depending on your camera model).
This light metering mode measures the light across the whole picture area, but strongly biases the reading to the center of the viewfinder area. Unlike the evaluative, it does not take the focus into account, so uses the same averaging pattern for every shot.
The default metering mode on most DSLRs, and the only option if you choose one of the basic automatic exposure modes. Measures light across the whole frame, but strongly biases the reading to the area around the autofocus point currently being used.

THE RULES OF COMPOSITION
Switch to Manual
The rule of thirds
Imagine that your image is divided into nine equal segments by two vertical and two horizontal lines. Try to position the most important elements in your scene along these lines, or at the points where they intersect. Doing so will add balance and interest to your photograph.
Leading lines
When we look at a photograph our eye is naturally drawn along lines. By thinking about how you place lines in your composition, you can affect the way we view the image, pulling us into the picture, towards the subject, or on a journey ‘through’ the scene. There are many different types of line – straight, diagonal, curvy, zigzag, radial etc. – each can be used to enhance the composition.
Foreground interest
Images with foreground interest (mostly landscapes) are generally more visually intriguing than those without. It creates a layered photograph that provides a focal point to start on, and then allows you to expand to other parts of the image.
Framing
The world is full of objects which make perfect natural frames, such as trees, archways and holes. By placing these around the edge of the composition you help to isolate the main subject from the outside world. The result is a more focused image which draws your eye naturally to the main point of interest.
Hidden details
Don’t forget to look up, down, behind as you are looking for subjects, there will be small details all around that can add context to a set of photographs. It could be a signpost, a discarded item or an interesting shadow.
Focus on the eyes
When shooting a close-up of a face (it could be a person or an animal), it is highly desirable to have their eyes in sharp focus and at the same time render the background blurry to avoid distractions.
