SYNOPSIS NO: 2 READER TITLE: ARCHITECTURE WHERE DESIRE CAN LIVE

AUTHOR: JACQUES DERRIDA

Jacques Derrida was interviewed with Eva Meyer about the separation between architecture theory

and technical practice.

He mentioned that before separation between theory and practice, between thinking and architecture,

a way of thinking linked to the architectural could have existed. I agree that architecture is not just a

functional object, but also contain its thought of meaning.

The concept of deconstruction itself resemble an architectural metaphor. I believe that every

architectural thinking has pros and cons. However, the thinking that occurred at certain era, it provide

an example or an image of the duration of time. Deconstruction can be method to visualise that which

establish the authority of the architectural concatenation in philosophy. However, in my opinion, it may

lose the originality and historical aspect of the early work if we didn’t use the precedent as proper

references.

Modernism distinguished itself by a criticism of this humanistic position. I totally agree that the early

work of architecture was design due to the humanistic position, however nowadays new type

architecture style has slowly decreasing just follow by the function. In addition, self-referential sign has

formed and influenced while several master architect produce them type of style during the period of

time.

Modern and postmodernism architecture to create a different kind of living which no longer fits the old

circumstance. Deconstruction represent the failure or the limitation imposed on a universal language.

However, I disagree that each of the language for architecture remain its importance and meaning to

translate it into different perception and angle of view.

There is formless desire for another form. Every architecture has its needs, community, and have to

suit to the site context. It the architecture is built without all of those requirement, it lose its identity and

meaning of itself.

In conclusion, Deconstruction is a way of understanding how something was created. Deconstruction

is breaking something down into parts for understanding. A subjective style may have its positive and

negative response. However, it has importance meaning behind it and certain influences to the period

of time.
