Target audience

I am aware that many people associate pop magazines with young female fans but I am keen to produce a pop magazine that is for both boys and girls. This stereotype that has been created is because most the pop magazines are pink and appeal to females but from my research and by looking at the pop industry, many of the good pop artists have a strong male following. If I am clever with how I produce my magazine then I hope I will have some male readers as well as female.

Pop is a massive music genre with a huge target audience. Many radios play pop music and it is probably the most commonly heard type of music. My target audience is likely to be 11-16 year olds, both male and female but predominately female.

Masthead

The mastheads are all bold and stand out. The layout of all the magazines is with the masthead at the top as this is one of the codes and conventions of music magazines. I plan to have my masthead at the top because it is one of the “hotspots” of the cover and peoples attentions are drawn to it. I have not decided what colour I will have mine but these magazines tend to have colour scheme and the masthead fits in with the scheme.

Who appears on the front cover of pop magazines?

The people on the front cover of pop magazines are instantly recognisable figures to the majority of people. For those who are not familiar with them, their names are by them. The three people on the magazines above are not to everyone's liking but they are always in the news and being talked about in the pop industry is good news. They are on the magazines because their face and interview will see copies and the magazine company will have been delighted to have someone of Miley Cyrus’ calibre on the front cover because these artists are interesting and people whether they like the artist or not often want to know more about them and see if there is more to them than just their songs. An artist like Katy Perry is very popular with females because they see her as inspirational and a good singer and she is also popular with men because she is attractive. On the other hand Justin Bieber is disliked strongly by most males but he has such a large loyal fan base of female fans that he doesn’t need them. I have learnt that because the front cover is the first thing the audience sees it is important that it is appealing and makes them want to purchase the magazine.

Layout

This magazine front cover is full of features to persuade the audience to purchase the magazine. One direction are the main image and they have lots of fans who will instantly purchase this magazine just for them.

The masthead is in the top left hand corner which is slightly less conventional than other magazines but then again we love pop always put their masthead their so it creates branding.

Just above the masthead are all the features of the magazine and below it is the slogan “don’t bore us, get to the chorus” this is a funny slogan that features on every issue.

There are gifts and posters in the magazine which act as puffs on the front cover. Music stars give interviews that are promoted as “secret” and some feature a grab quote to intrigue the audience.
