The Northern frigid zone

• It lies between the Arctic Circle (66 1/2⁰) and North Pole (90⁰)

• The Arctic (North frigid) zone includes northern parts of Canada, Alaska, Greenland, Scandinavia, Russia.

The southern frigid zone

• It lies between the Antarctic Circle (66 1/2⁰) and South Pole (90⁰ S)

• The Antarctic (southern frigid) zone includes Antarctica.

Climate

• Because of the slanting rays of the sun and both the frigid zones are far from the equator……….

1. Not even enough to warm the land

2. Winters are very severe and temperature may drop to -40⁰

3. In summer, the temperature may rise to 3⁰ to 12⁰

4. Rainfall may range from 15 to 30 cm in a year

• During summer there is continuous daylight even at midnight.

• In winter, these regions have continuous darkness.

• In June, When the northern frigid zone receives continuous light, the southern frigid zone had continuous darkness.

• This situation has reversed in December.

Plant Life

• Because of permanent frozen soil, hardly any crops or plants grow here.

• But in summer when the snow thaws , some shrubs such as mosses, lichens and grass grow.

• A few flower-bearing plants and berry-bearing shrubs such as blu-berries, cranberries and wild currents are seen.

• Few people do grow a few vegetables for personal consumption.

• It is impossible for trees to grow here.

Animal Life

• A few animals such as the reindeer, caribou, bear, fox, hare, ermine and musk ox, etc., are found here.

• A few birds such as the Arctic tern and Snowy owl are survive in this extreme cold because of the thick white coat of fur on their bodied on which, when snow melts, changes to greyish-brown in color.

• Apart from these animals and birds, plenty of fish, whales, seals and walruses are also found here.
