THE PASSIVE VOICEBRYAN EÍTO MILLERA

THE USE OF PASSIVEThe passive voice appears when we desire to focus on the action or events which took place in a sentence.

``Sarah commited an unforgettable mistake last week.´´

In this sentence someone blames Sarah for a mistake made last week. Depending on our point of view or attitude towards this event we might now focus on who made the mistake or when it was made rather than the mistake itself.

``An unforgettable mistake was made.´´

Now the quote subject is the unforgettable mistake. That’s all we reach (or want) to know so far and all that matters.

THE PASSIVE FORM ACROSS VERB TENSESThe main rule to follow and basic structure for passive form goes this way:

Subject + finite form of to be + Past Participle

Now we’ll check the way passive form works on different tenses. We’ll make use of the verb Perform;

· Present Simple: _______ is/are performed.· Past perfect: _______ was/were performed. · Present Perfect: _______ has/have been performed. ·Past Perfect Simple: _______ had been performed.· Future with will: ________ will be performed.· Going to future: ________is/are going to be performed. ·Modal: (e.g. could): _______ could be performed.

METAMORPHOSIS: MAIN CHANGES• The object of the active sentence becomes the subject of the passive

sentence: Michael just bought the brand new iPhone. The brand new iPhone was bought by Michael

• The finite form of the verb is replaced by to be + past participle: I heard of those news when I was driving way home Those news were heard when I was driving way home.

• The subject of the active sentence becomes the object of the passive sentence or might even be omitted: Mom ironed my shirts earlier this morning. My shirts were ironed earlier this morning.
