Wondrous is this foundation – the fates have brokenand shattered this city; the work of giants crumbles. The roofs are ruined, the towers toppled, frost in the mortar has broken the gate, torn and worn and shorn by the storm, eaten through with age. The earth’s graspholds the builders, rotten, forgotten, the hard grip of the ground, until a hundredgenerations of men are gone. This wall, rust-stainedand covered with moss, has seen one kingdom after another, stood in the storm, steep and tall, then tumbled. The foundation remains, felled by the weather,it fell…..grimly ground up ….……cleverly created….…… a crust of mud surrounded …….. put together a swiftand subtle system of rings; one of great wisdomwondrously bound the braces together with wires TAKEN FROM EXETER

In Egypt's sandy silence, all alone,Stands a gigantic Leg, which far off throwsThe only shadow that the Desert knows:—"I am great OZYMANDIAS," saith the stone,"The King of Kings; this mighty City shows"The wonders of my hand."— The City's gone,—Nought but the Leg remaining to discloseThe site of this forgotten Babylon.

We wonder,—and some Hunter may expressWonder like ours, when thro' the wildernessWhere London stood, holding the Wolf in chace,He meets some fragment huge, and stops to guessWhat powerful but unrecorded raceOnce dwelt in that annihilated place. By Horace Smith

Ozymandias was an alternative name for the Egyptian pharaoh Ramesses II. He had erected his massive Egyptian statue and quoted in its inscription: "King of Kings Ozymandias am I. If any want to know how great I am and where I lie, let him outdo me in my work.“The statue is now in ruins.

‘Time brings an end to everything. We should not mistake for a tragedy what is no more than the passage of time.’ ~Robert Brault"Or is it your reputation that's bothering you? But look at how soon we're all forgotten. The abyss of endless time that swallows it all. The emptiness of those applauding hands. The people who praise us; how capricious they are, how arbitrary. And the tiny region it takes place. The whole earth a point in space - and most of it uninhabited." -Marcus Aurelius
