GENERAL STRUCTURE OF TURKISH NATIONAL

EDUCATION SYSTEM

The Turkish Education Systemto meet the educationalneeds of individuals in a holistic manner“formal education” and “non-formaleducation” consist of twomain parts

FORMAL EDUCATIONFormal education, the same level of a certain age group and for individuals in under the umbrella of programsdeveloped in accordance with thepurpose of the regular school education. Formal education covers pre-schooleducation, primary, secondary andhigher education institutions

PRE-SCHOOL EDUCATION

Pre-school education consist of the education of children between3-6 years who have not reached the compulsory primaryeducation based on option. Pre-school education institutions, established as an independent primary schools, such as classes of applications due to girls vocational high schools and kinder gardenwhich are tied to other educational institutions. The purpose of pre-school education is to gain physical, mental, emotionalprogress and acquire good habits, the preparation for their primaryeducation to give the conditions for children from disadvantagedbackground and to provide a common habitat for children and toprovide Turkish language to be spoken correctly and well.In 2005-2006 academic year in 17,634 pre-school educationinstitutions 549,604 children are being educated and in theseinstitutions 22,789 teachers are working.

PRIMARY EDUCATİON

Primary education consists of training and education of children in between 6-14 age group. The purpose of primary education according to the basic information, skill, behavior and habit gain, to grow up with nationalmorality and to prepare for upper education.Primary education is compulsory for men and women forall citizens and at state schools is it free. Primaryeducation institutions consist of eight-year school. Inthese schools, continious education is given and primaryschool diploma is given to whom finish. In 2005-2006 academic year 34.990 in schools 10.512.356 children arebeing educated and 392.481 teachers are working.

SECONDARY EDUCATION

Secondary education covers all the minimum four yearsgeneral, vocational and technical training which arebaned.The purpose of secondary education is to providestudents with a common general culture, promoteindividual and community problems and seek solutionsgiving them the conscious of contributing to the socio-economical and cultural development of the country toprepare the students to both higher education and totheir carees and business fields according to theirinterest, capasity and ability.

Secondary Education is of two sections;

General secondary educationVocational

andTechnical secondary education

Secondary education consist of high schoolswhich have a variety of programs students find a way to be grown up by approaching one of theseprograms with these abilities and wishes.The purpose of general secondary education is the general culture , to recognize the problems of society is to raise people who contribute theeconomic cultural and social of development of the country and to prepare them to a highereducation.

General secondary education is of general High Schools, Anatolian High Schools, Science High Schools, Social Sciences High Schools,Anatolian Teacher High Schools, Spor High Schools, Anatolian Fine Arts Schools andMulti-programmed High Schools

Vocational and technical secondary education; Schoolsare institutions. Tearing man to work and business fields and preparingstudents to higher education. Vocational and technicalsecondary education consists of. Male technical schools, girls’ technical schools, trade and tourism schools andreligious teaching schools.

In 2005-2006 academic year in 7.443 schools of 4.038 vocational and technical schools 3.213.605 students(2.037.490 general, 1.176.115 are being taught in vocational and technical secondary education) 184.246 teachers (101,907 general 82.339 vocational andtechnical secondary education) are working.

HİGHER EDUCATION

Higher education includes , giving at least two years higher education based on secondary education , training the top level manpower and scientific researchfields personel all education institutions.Higher education includes these substances:1) To train students interests and abilities in line according to our country’sscience policy and needs of the community high-level manpower2) To do scientific education a variety of stages3) to make review and research for scientific, technical and cultural problems tosolve4) to research our country's concerning progress and development all theproblems and to offer the results of this5) to do broadcast all kinds of providing the development of advancement of science and technology6) to raise the general level of society and to share science data with people.Higher education consist of universities, faculties, institutes, colleges, conservatoriesThere are 53 state universities and 26 private universities in our countryOur country(including private universities) 2.073.428 students are beingeducated , 26.029 instructor and 48.878 teaching staff are working.
