Performance Based Music Videos involve the band or artist performing their song. This is either done as a gig
or in a studio setting.
‘Man on a Wire’ by The Script is anexample of a performance basedmusic video. Danny O’Donoghue (leadsinger) was filmed on a wire singingthe song, Mark Sheehan (lead guitar)was filmed playing the guitar on theside of the building and Glen Power(drummer) was filmed on the edge ofthe buildings roof.
To film this they used harnesses andplayed the song as much as they couldalongside the track. In the editing process, the band wiped out the audio from whenthey were filming and recorded theinstruments later on top.
This One Direction video was directed by Vaughan Arnell and was shot in black and white and involved a simplistic idea of them recording the song. In an interview Vaughan said, ‘I thought
the most pure way to do it was like, if you were going back into the recording studio when they recorded it for the first time, to make it as uncontrived as possible and that you really
got the qualities of their voices coming through.’ This replicates the stereotypical elements of a performance related music video because the concept is simply seeing the artist perform their song. The 5 members sat in a circle in the studio surrounded by guitars, drums, pianos
and microphones with the camera crew creating a track for the cameras around them in order to capture every angle possible. To create the full studio effect they also filmed them in the recording studio where they listened back to the track. Parts of the vocals that day were
used in the official video however a majority of the song was added in during the editing process for a cleaner finish as well as the music.
‘I Will Wait’ is by Mumford and Sons. The video is of them performing the song at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado. The beginning 20 seconds of the song is on the
road with the words ‘The road to Red Rocks’ on the centre of the screen and then later ‘Mumford and Sons’ and ‘I Will Wait.’ The rest of the video is of them
performing the song. The editing process for the song was rather simple as the audio from the recording was used as you can hear the crowds cheering and singing along.
Reverse Lip Syncing is where the video is filmed forwards with the lyrics backwards. Then in the editing process the video is reversed so that the
lyrics are played forward.
An example of reverse lip syncing in music videos is ‘Smile’ by R5. The idea of the video was to show the four seasons. The video was filmed backwards with the lyrics forwards.
The band had to learn the song backwards a month prior to filming. In the editing process, the video was reversed so it looked like they were walking backwards but the
lyrics were forwards, and then later the music was added. The activities done in the video were carefully chosen to ensure that the reverse concept was at its full effect. Therefore the band chose to have water fights, a slip n slide, walking, change of coats and clothes, throwing paper plates at a picnic, falling off a bench backwards and falling leaves. To add extra detail during the editing process they slowed the track significantly down in order
to capture more detail during the reverse activities.
This music video by Coldplay is known for being one of the most distinctive reverse narrative videos. The video begins with lead singer Chris Martin singing whilst lying on his back on a
mattress. To reiterate the reverse concept of the song a cyclist is shown in the scene once the camera draws away from Chris who is cycling backwards, soon followed by Chris leaping up from the mattress. A majority of the video is Chris walking in reverse through London where
he walks through the streets, jumps over a wall, walks past a group playing basketball, walking over a train track and a woods, putting on a jacket, getting into his BMW car, having a
car crash and driving the car all of which is backwards.
This song is by ‘Rhett and Link’ and is titled on YouTube as ‘2 Guys 600 Pillows.’ The video consists of the duo messing around in their house and garden with 600 pillows. It starts of
with the two under a mountain of pillows with someone behind the camera throwing pillows onto the mountain but is in reverse. Then Rhett and Link appear and sing the song.
Eventually they are just left with a pillow each. The next two scenes consist of them independently walking through a pillow wall and then walking towards the camera whilst
having pillows thrown at them. Then they jump on a trampoline whilst having pillows thrown into it which is followed by them jumping off the roof into a huge pile of pillows, and then the opposite of the latter. The remaining scenes feature the throwing of a stack
of pillows and walking out of pillow igloos. The editing process consisted of wiping out the audio from the original recordings and then lip synching in a clean copy of the song. They
also released a forwards version of the song to allow their viewers to understand how they made the video backwards.
