Program DescriptionThis course will focus on introducing students to the most interesting archaeology of southwestern Turkey today. This region of Anatolia has a fascinating mixture of ancient Greek settlements (Ionia and the Dorian Hexapolis), Roman colonies (the Roman imperial provinces of Asia, Lycia and Pamphylia), and indigenous kingdoms (Phrygian, Carian, Lycian). Although most of the exciting material culture of the region dates to the heyday of Greece and Rome, monuments from as early as the Bronze Age to as late as the Ottoman period may also be seen. The abundance of archaeological material in this region provides an opportunity to view the gamut of archaeological approaches and techniques used in Mediterranean archaeology today. It also provides the opportunity to ponder controversial interpretations of archaeological material, for instance: What is truly Greek? What is Roman? What is Anatolian / Near Eastern? To what degree did western classical cultures influence those of the Near East - and how much did the Near Eastern cultures influence the west? Did indigenous cultures retain their native traditions after the Greeks and Romans settled in the region? Ancient society was multicultural, just as our world is today, and many of the same issues that are now being examined in our society were relevant then.

The program will be divided into thirds, based on the three primary categories of archaeology that are noteworthy in this region: Classical, Underwater, and Near Eastern. The first third of the program is designed to give students a basic knowledge of Greco-Roman history and archaeology in Asia Minor (southwestern Turkey is home to some of the most impressive Greco-Roman sites in the ancient world, e.g. Ephesus, Pergamum). The lectures (many of them on-site) will introduce students to the history, mythology, religion, and art history of the region, as well as to techniques of land excavation. The second segment (with some overlap) will focus on the specific techniques and potential of underwater archaeology, which has notable origins in Bodrum. Nautical sites and subject matter may date to all time periods. The last third will cover the archaeology of indigenous cultures in the region, for the most part focusing on the classical period. In this segment, it is hoped that students will develop an awareness of the neglected and often misunderstood history and archaeology of the indigenous Anatolians, whose legacy has frequently been overshadowed (and even appropriated) by that of Greece and Rome.
