Read the conversation. Answer these questions?

1. What happened to Giorgio that made him want to study English harder?

2. If you were Giorgio or Tanya, would you say “am going to” or “will”?

Page 120 Grammar: Going to….

Page 21: Unit 12 English 2

Will can be used to express willingness/offer:

◦ I'll wash the dishes if you dry.◦ We're going to the movies. Will you join us?

It can also express intention (especially in the first person):

◦ I'll do my exercises later on.

and prediction:

◦ specific: The meeting will be over soon.◦ timeless: Humidity will ruin my hairdo.◦ habitual: The river will overflow its banks every spring.◦ Less certain plans: I’ll probably go stay home but I’m not sure.

“will” is not that common for expressing plans

Page 22: Unit 12 English 2

Will is for predictions or possibilities◦ It looks like it will rain tonight.

Will is for immediate future/offers◦ Are you hot? I’ll turn on the air conditioner.

Going to is for plans◦ I’m going to meet some friend tonight.

Going to can also be used for predictions◦ I think it’s going to be a hard test.
