⁞ WHAT KIND OF MAGAZINE DO YOU READ?
LISTEN TO JULIA THOMSON, JUNIOR EDITOR
OF TEENS MAGAZINES
• INTERVIEWER: JULIA, WHAT’S YOUR MAGAZINE ABOUT?• Julia: Well, our magazine is a teenage magazine, so the kind of stuff it has,
hmm…, a very common problem is conflict with parents. It can be over all kinds of things. But usually it involves the teenager wanting to do something and the parents not wanting him or her to do it. Sometimes it can be friends, the block you go out with, or sometimes appearance , hmm…, you know, cool clothes the teenager wants to wear and the parents are against. I had one reader who felt she has terrible problems at home because she wanted to have ears pierced and her mother refused.
It’s amazing the number of problems related to communication. People are leaving together at home, but never discuss anything.
• INTERVIEWER: ARE THOSE ALL THE PROBLEMS?• Julia: Nope! Another issue is money. We never seem to have enough bucks to
buy clothes or CD’s. And then the really big area is relationships, not with parents, but between blokes and girls.
You know, “my girlfriend left me… my boyfriend left me… I’m really depressed” that kinds of thing. Hmm…, Sometimes someone goes out on a date has a really nice evening and then the next day gets ignored completely by the person they dated!
