Ideas

Brand IdentityThe brand identity will contain the name of the music magazine on each page beside

the number page, the back of the magazine will have links to the social media sites that

the magazine is participating. Lastly, the website will be on the bind of the magazine.

Images to be taken Front cover – the front cover will have a medium close up to illustrate the facial expression

within the artist.Double Page Spread – the double page spread will contain medium close up to signify the face more clearly without getting uncomfortably close and long shot to indicate the full body shot of the artist/band and to take note of their portrayal as an individual human being why

people inspire them.

Colour schemeThe colour scheme of my magazine will be white background to make the artist stand out also to connote the purity and originality of what the magazine is trying to put across to the target audience. The text has to be bold and easy

to read. The colours of the text will be black to connote formality, it gives a very aggressive colour scheme and lastly, it increases readability.

Target AudienceThe target audience for my magazine will

be 20 and over because it will contain irrelevant language from the artist/band.

MastheadThe masthead is going to have a 3D

effect to connote the clear messages and values and lastly it will catch the target

audiences attention. This inspiration has been taken from the Mojo magazine that I

have been focusing on the past few weeks.

Frequency of the Magazine’s releaseThe frequency of the magazine’s releases will be monthly so the editors will have a

month plan ahead of what the next magazine will contain.

Mood board

Mood Board ReflectionMy magazine will contain a puff promotion which is similar to the magazine that I have been analysing which is Mojo magazine because in my opinion this is one of their idea to retain their target audience.

My magazine will comprehend a shade of blue to connote wisdom, confidence, intelligence, faith and truth. The connotation about these words is that I want my target audience to feel as this music magazine is going to be one of the blockbuster music magazine out there.

For my magazine, the masthead will be similar with the masthead of Mojo magazine as it is very effective, bold, simple and eye catching. The connotation of the masthead is that I am not only taking inspirations from different categories of music magazines but to demonstrate to my target audience that this magazine is going to be the best of the best.

As a finishing product, my magazine will have a similar front cover to this. The purpose why I have chosen this specific front cover because it is very bright, it relaxes the target audiences eyes because of the use of different shades of colour such as pink, white and blue and lastly, the use of text which are very bold and easy to attract audiences with the use of large text around the main image and also the main colour that has their own purpose.

Target Readership

• Age & Gender

Hartley’s 7 subjectivities has a similar target audience to ‘Mojo’ as it covers the age range, gender, class, ethnicity and nationality. This connotes that Mojo magazine has mostly covered Hartley’s 7 subjectivities which means I have to do the same thing for my music magazine to have a similar approach from the public.

• Spending Power

From what I found in my results, people are willing to pay £1.00 to £2.50. This connotes that they want to pay for a magazine in a cheap price, however this is a very low price especially a magazine that is going to compete with one of the high-end music magazine, Mojo. Moreover, a magazine that contains interesting information about bands, artist, etc.

To incentivize my target audience, I am going to give them a subscription discount if they are a subscriber to the music magazine and I will be distributing a subscription discount card so they can use this if they are willing to pay for a hard copy in a store. The purpose for this is to entice my target audience by giving them the privilege for being part of ‘Tune iN’ magazine and also to grow popularity within the UK and hopefully around the world.

• HOW WILL IT APPEAL TO THE READERSHIP?

To make it attractive towards to reader, the content page will have bright colors such as pink and blue to make it more appealing. Moreover, the magazine will contain interesting facts/information such as new album or releasing a new song and also puff promotions such as being able to take part of a competition to win a ticket to their favorite band, etc.

Target Readership• Katz

In relation to Katz theory the type of audiences that I am targeting to are audiences that I can escape from the humdrum of every day life because consumers can read up on the exciting lifestyles of their favourite artist. Moreover, creating personal relationships with the audiences such as rhetorical questions to address the readership directly. The purpose of doing this as if the reader and I are friends discussing the contents of the articles amongst one another; likewise ‘Mojo’ uses this strategy such as advertising their magazine which leaves the reader to think whether they should subscribe to the magazine for future issue or not. Furthermore, personal identity where music magazines can function in enabling their consumers to find something about themselves. For example, finding a particular genre or artist within the magazine that the audience may not have heard before, then go online to listen to the artist music.

• Maslow

Applying Maslow’s theory to my magazine would make it easier for my target audience to understand the motivations behind the pieces of evidence to support the arguments. For example, my magazine will mostly be targeted to consumers between 15 – 24 where they like to be accepted by their peers; also achieving things for themselves.

• Socio-Economic Needs

The denotation of the socio-economic needs of the magazine readership will mainly be male audience in the C2DE which are the Skilled Working Class, Working Class and lastly, those at Lowest Level of Subsistence. This connote that they will likely purchase my magazine as it is cheap and convenient price of a magazine.

• Psychographics

The type of audience that are going to be reading my magazine are audiences that seeks discovery. Energy, individualism and experience. Values difference and adventure which are the explorers.

Masthead IdeasTune iN

Beat

Treble

The denotation behind ‘Tune iN’ to be part of one of my ideas to be my masthead because I want my target audience to have that feeling where they feel nostalgic of the good ol’ days such as featuring the legend of music, for example, Bob Marley, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Whitney Houston etc. I want them to also feel that those legends will never be forgotten nor overlooked. The strapline will support this as the strapline will be ‘Tune in & rewind’ which what the magazine is all about.

The denotation behind ‘Beat’ is that I want my target audience to have a steady pulse of a certain song; also to have that rhythmic movement, or the speed which a piece music is played so for example if they go to the gym they want a new song to listen to and ‘Beat’ magazine will be the best option to find the upbeat type of music as ‘Beat’ magazine offers ‘The newest and realist’ (strapline) music.

The denotation behind ‘Treble’ is that the music's that will be featured in the magazine will have an upbeat to the music which will make my target audience buy the magazine especially targeting to teenagers as they want those type of music in clubs or house parties. The strapline that will support this masthead is ‘Feel your beat!’. The connotation behind this is that my target audience will already feel the beat within them by looking at the magazine.

Font StylesI have chosen this font style specifically because it is bold which will make my music magazine stand out of other magazines. However, I could improve this font by making it a 3D effect, for example Mojo magazine, because I am inspired by their magazine and would like to have the same approach from their target audience whether I have met their criteria.

The reason why I have chosen this font style because it has a similar effect to the Mojo magazine such as the 3D effect. However, I could improve this font style by making the shadow effect darker to make it stand out but this could be hard to grab my target audience attention as it does not have that similar effect compare to the Mojo masthead.

I have chosen this font because of the style is different but however it is not similar to Mojo magazine so I may not use this font style as the font style has to be similar to the masthead that I am inspired to.

Final Font Style

Name of the text: Century GothicDefinition of “Tune”: A melody, especially one which characterizes a certain piece of

music.Definition of “iN”: Expressing the situation of something that is or appears to be

enclosed or surrounded by something else.

Magazine IdeasMy strapline is going to contain similar language to that used in Mojo magazine because of the use of superlatives to suggest that they are the greatest magazine in the entire world and also to connote that I want my music magazine to be one of them to be able to compete within their high standards as a professional music magazine.

My magazine will contain a puff promotion to grab my target audience attention and also to grow popularity through giving them the privilege to own a copy that is updated and contain one of the greatest hits throughout the years OR helping a new band promoting their music album to grow fame in the music industry.

The positioning of the masthead will be on top to make it easier for the consumers to find my magazine, also as an inspiration every music magazine that is published the masthead is on top. Moreover, the masthead will either be on the front or at the back depending on who the artist is.

GENRE, LAYOUT, STYLE Genre• The denotation of the genre of my music magazine that I am going to produce is a mixture of classic,

modern rock, folk, soul, country, reggae and lastly, electronic and experimental. The reason why I have chosen these genres because the music magazine that I have been deconstructed contain all these genres.

Style• The colour scheme that I am going to use across the pages is a shade of blue to connote truth,

confidence, loyalty and intelligence. The reason behind this is that I want my spectator to have faith on my music magazine and as an editor I would like to give my target audience the privilege to go through the magazine pages without disappointing them. Moreover, I will achieve this in Photoshop by using the ‘Eye Dropper’ which means by using this tool I have the option which allows me to pick up the exact colour or an average of the colours around it.

Layout• The layout will establish similar to the front cover and double page spread of Mojo magazine because

I want to follow their success as a music magazine distributor and uses their strategy into my music magazine and hoping that I will have a similar approach from my target audience such as how I presented my music magazines. The key factor of producing a successful music magazine is through the convention, style and format because it is the first thing what the audience will particularly appeal and then move to the information, so as an editor I have to make my music magazine as appealing as possible.

House Style/Colour Scheme

House style

The house style is going to be bold text and bright colours everywhere to make it easier for my target audience to familiar with the layout and font types of the magazine likewise to my magazine Mojo where they have used colours that is not too bright but colours that seeks peace and tranquillity above everything else. Moreover, to enhance the quality of my product it has to contain high quality photographs and it has to be done in a professional way. Lastly, what inspired me to do this is that every music magazine has their own originality and this is one of their own ideas to entice their target audience. From the software that I am going to use, I will use the “house style” of the magazine by using the ‘eye dropper’ (I) tool to capture the colour and is save in my swatches. The eye dropper tool is used to pick up a colour value from the canvas. Moreover, the eye dropper tool has a single option which allows you to pick up the exact colour or an average of the colours around it.

Colour scheme

The colour scheme of my magazine will be white background to make the artist stand out also to connote the purity and originality of what the magazine is trying to put across to the target audience. The text has to be bold and easy to read. The colours of the text will be black to connote formality, it gives a very aggressive colour scheme and lastly, it increases readability. To make it easier for to detect the colours I have used previously I will add them into my swatches and rename them to make it easier for me to look for them when I need them. Similarly, to the magazine that I am inspired to, Mojo, stick to their brand identity with colours, for example, there’s always a colour of blue that is similar to the front cover and within their contents page they uses red, black and white and you will find it again inside the magazine such as double page spreads.

Why have I chosen Survey Monkey and a Questionnaire as part of my Primary Research

The reason why I have chosen Survey Monkey as part ofmy primary research is because it allows users to define surveys and capture responses from a variety of sources, including email, Facebook, Twitter, websites, blogs and banner ads. Moreover, Survey Monkey are secure to use,for example, they make sure that your account and your data remains private and secure. Furthermore, you can send a survey invitation to your own email list using our simple list management tool. Track who responds to your survey, and send follow-up reminders to those who don't. Lastly, you can watch live graphs and charts as they are collected in real-time.

• What is your gender?

As you can see from the results, mostly men answered my questionnaire. This connotes that my music magazine will most likely to be targeted to male audience. As a result from this question, my music magazine will contain male artist/band to connote the masculine of the magazine and to attract the spectator though this.

• What is your age?

From this result, I can easily detect that most people answered my questionnaire is 18 and under which was not my expectation because the music magazine that I am inspired to its target audience is above 30+. I could change the content to something that 18 and under would love such as young artist/band that plays similar genre to what music magazine that I am inspired to (Mojo magazine).

• Suitable name for the magazine?

For the name of my magazine, I have created 3 names and as a result “Tune iN” has the most votes which means this is going to be the name of my music magazine. Moreover, this name is suitable for my music magazine because it connotes that my music magazine will contain music from the past and give my target audience the taste of what proper music is like.

• Price range?

With the price range, it is an average price which connotes that people from different social status will be able to purchase my music magazine. Moreover, this could also mean that younger audience will most likely to purchase my magazine because I will be covering modern rock genre which is very highly popular nowadays.

• Frequency of release of the magazine?

With the frequency of release of the magazine, the results display as I should release my music magazine monthly which is similar to Mojo magazine. This is an advantage for me as an editor as I have a month to plan for next month issue and research for new information about what I could talk about the sub-genres such as classic, modern rock, folk, soul, country, reggae and electronic and experimental.

• What synergy (relationship) with a social media product would you expect a brand new music magazine associated with?

With the social media product associated, the results convey that I should work with both social media and I received comments from unknown people that I should try working with Instagram and promote my new magazine with them.

• What should be covered in the magazine?

As you can see from the result, the coverage that most people voted is interviews. This connotes that my double page spread will contain an interview about an artist or a band. This connotes I have to create a 10 questions and answers to be displayed in my double page spread.

• What genre of music are you interested in?

From the results, most people are interested in ‘Modern rock’. This connotes I have to interview an artist/band in my double page spread. However Reggae and Electronic and Experimental are not that behind from Modern rock but as Modern rock has more vote, I have to stick to what the results has turned out to appeal my target audience and show them my understanding.

Questionnaire

I have created another questionnaire to have a broad of opinions for my magazine that I am producing and I thought this was a great idea so I can specifically target the right reader/s for my magazine.

QuestionnaireHere is a sample of my questionnaire in a hard copy. As you can see this has already been filled out. The hard copy questionnaire contains 10 questions to have a wide range of responses from other people. In the next few slides I will be deconstructing each questionnaires and explaining how this will help me create my next music magazine issue.

The purpose of doing this is to collect enough results to be able to have an idea what type of magazine that I will be producing as my 1st issue so that it will be a hit.

Photo of people answering my questionnaire

Questionnaire Results

Q1 – What is your gender?

For this question, I have gathered an equal result which means my music magazine will attract both genders.

Q2 – What is your age?

Mostly ‘18 and under’ answered my questionnaire which means I have to produce a music magazine that meets their criteria through their age. Moreover, I am not only producing a magazine just for ‘18 and under’ but producing a magazine that also attracts older audiences to have a wide range and grow popularity such as Mojo magazine.

Q3 – How much would you be prepared to pay for a music magazine of your choice?

To pay for a music magazine, people has answered ‘£1.00 to £2.50’. This connotes that they want to pay for a magazine with a low price but however I am competing with Mojo magazine that cost £4.80 for a magazine. This means I have to research how come they let their audiences pay a magazine with a high price.

Q4 – What genre of music do you tend to listen to on a regular basis?

The type of music that the audience has answered is ‘modern rock’. This connotes that they want the first issue to have something related to modern rock. Moreover, I will be producing a questionnaire similar to this and I will have an audience approximately 100 and they will fill it out and the most genre that has been voted will be the next issue. But it will also contain other genre to make the magazine not boring.

Questionnaire Results

Q5 – How dependable is price when purchasing a copy of a music magazine?

I have a variety of answers from this question. Some of them says ‘very important’, ‘particularly important and lastly, ‘averagely important’. This connote that some of them the price of the magazine does not affect them but some of them do.

Q6 – What is your occupation?

The occupation that has answered this questionnaire are educated which means I could insert a page into my magazine something related to school and most of them are ‘employed’ which connotes I have to deliver a page about advertising new jobs or tips about work.

Q7 – Suitable name for the magazine?

Most of them have chosen ‘Tune iN’ as a suitable name for the magazine which emphasise this will be the name for my music magazine. However I have to have some explanation the reason why I have chosen this name when I could have chosen one of the others.

Q8 – Would you be more inclined to buy a music magazine if it came with free content?

Most of them says ‘yes’ which means I will have to insert a free content such as CD, a scratch card whether they have treated themselves to watch their favourite band live, etc.

Q9 – Approximately, how many hours a week do you spend listening to music?

The amount of hours that the audience spend their time listening to music varies in this question. Some of them listen to music ’10 to 14’ and some of them ’20+’. This connotes that their love towards music is very high which means I have to make sure that the outcome of my first issue will attract them and entice them through puff promotions such as competitions, games, etc.

Questionnaire Results

Q10 – What should be covered in the magazine?

People are more interested with ‘interviews’ which connotes the magazine has to produce a page that has enough detail to make the audience interested through using exaggeration words/phrases. Moreover, most of them are interested with ‘tour dates’ and ‘gossips’ which I will have a page so that they don’t feel like I am ignoring their interest.

Health and Safety at Work Act 1974

‘An Act to make further provision for securing the health, safety and welfare of persons at work, for protecting others against risks to health or safety in connection with the activities of persons at work, for controlling the keeping and use and preventing the unlawful acquisition, possession and use of dangerous substances, and for controlling certain emissions into the atmosphere; to make further provision with respect to the employment medical advisory service; to amend the law relating to building regulations, and the Building (Scotland) Act 1959; and for connected purposes.’

Insurance

When thinking about the relevant health and safety issues at work, I need to consider taking the reasonable steps to prevent any accidents and harm caused to my employees. If these reach the health and safety standards then I shouldn’t have to pay compensation. However I need to consider if found liable I need to pay compensation.

Permission

Approval Letter

This is important to obtain as there are Laws and regulations for using other people’s property that are not mine that why it is important for the owner to sign this contract so that they are fully aware that I am using his property.

Intellectual PropertyWhat is Intellectual Property?

Intellectual property (IP) refers to creations of the mind, such as inventions; literary and artistic works; designs; and symbols, names and images used in commerce.

Industrial property

Industrial property such as inventions, industrial designs, trademarks which is afforded protection under national and international intellectual property laws.

Copyright

Copyright is a legal right created by the law of a country, that grants the creator of an original work exclusive rights to its use and distribution, usually for a limited time, with the intention of enabling the creator to receive compensation for their intellectual effort.

Before producing the magazine, I need to be aware of laws and regulations such as the copyright law because

this will help me to protect my content from people trying to copy it and use it for other purposes.

When advertising my magazine or any other products that I am going to conclude as part of advertising in my magazine, I need to be aware of defamation, privacy, and publicity issues. The reason behind this is because when publishing the interviews and gossip pages, the magazine needs to make sure that they do not break any privacy rules of the subjects life. As an editor I have to make sure the magazine will contain any information that is true to the word and no false accusations to gain more money.

To make sure my magazine does not break any copyright laws, my magazine will ask permission from the social network sites that will be on the front page to use the logos. I will do this by contacting them and asking them for the permission by explaining what the use would be.

Finally, when advertising within the magazine, the advertisers or magazine must have the permission of everyone within the advertisement involved to publish the advert. This could be the product or service label, a celebrity etc.

Conclusion

In conclusion, I have to produced a production process for my music magazine from beginning to the final product. The purpose of doing is, is simply because to make it easier for me to detect what type of colour scheme that I will be using and the denotations of why I have chosen that specific colour. Moreover, most of the ideas that I have come up with are from one of the market leader, Mojo magazine, I have done this because I want to be one of the market leader and be able to compete with Mojo by researching who are their target audience, how frequent they release their magazine’s, type of brand identity they use within their magazine, how they layout their magazine, what is their genre and lastly, what type of style do they use to entice their specific target audience.

To be able to meet their expectations, I have created a questionnaire through survey monkey (source: https://www.surveymonkey.com) to be able to have an idea who I am targeting to such as gender, age range, how much they are willing to pay for a magazine, type of music they listen to, their interest and so on. I have also produced a hard copy questionnaire so that I have a range of answers.

For me as an editor, I have to create mood boards so that I know what type of style my magazine will look like, type of shot I will be using in my magazine, flat plans of what the layout of my magazine will look like. I have also included hand drawn drafts for my front cover and double page spread so that when I use Photoshop it will be much easier for me to allocate where everything goes such as masthead, cover lines, strapline etc.
