VANITAS Still Life
Paintings executed in the vanitas stylewere meant to remind viewers of thetransience of life, the futility of
pleasure, and the certainty of death.They also provided a moral
justification for painting attractiveobjects.
Common vanitas symbols include:

rotten fruit (decay)
bubbles (the brevity of life andsuddenness of death)
smoke
Watches, hourglasses, (the brevity oflife)
musical instruments (brevity and theephemeral nature of life).
Fruit, flowers and butterflies can beinterpreted in the same way, and apeeled lemon was, like life, attractiveto look at but bitter to taste.
When drawing fabric, if you can understand how the fabric is drapingand try to see it in terms of basic shapes you can better add propervalue. Can you see the cones and cylinders happening in the fabricon the left? Fabric usually has straight lines like cones and cylindersand it occasionally has gentle curves.
