What causes severe weather?
WHAT IS SEVERE WEATHER?
Lightning
▪ Lightning kills 2,000 people each year
▪ Oak trees are struck more than any other tree because they contain more water.
▪ Is lightning helpful?
Lightning & Thunderstorms
▪ Thunderstorms have three main things to them
▪ Wind- a updraft is created and takes warm moist air.
▪ Water- for the rain drops
▪ Heat- heat helps with the positive and negative charges that helps makes lightning
▪ Some times there is even hail in storms
Lightning is a part of thunderstorm. Lightning has both positive and negative charges.

Hurricanes
▪ Atlantic hurricane season last from June 1st to November 30th . The end date was October 31st.
▪ Hurricanes were first given names in the 19th century by Clement Wragge, an Australian weatherman.
▪ 2005 there were so many hurricanes that the NHC started to use the Greek alphabet.

Tornados
▪ Tornadoes don’t last more than ten minutes.
▪ Texas is the number one state for killer and the most tornadoes.
▪ Where is tornado ally?
The Fujita Scale and how to find a possible tornado
Tetsuya Theodore Fujita in 1971 created the Fujita scale to rank tornadoes. This helps meteorologists tell the public in how severe the tornado will be.
How is a tornado formed?
▪ Step one: Air is rolled between two different winds.
▪ Step two: This rolled air turns up so it is standing.
▪ Step three: after the air stands up when it touches the ground it becomes a tornado.
Watches, warnings and emergencies
Hurricane
▪ Tropical storm and Hurricane watch- issued 48 hours prior to storm like conditions to take effect.
▪ Tropical Storm and Hurricane Warnning- issued 36 hours till storm hits the area in question.
Tornadoes
▪ Tornado watch- means that there maybe tornadoes in the area
▪ Tornado warning- a tornado has been sighted. Take shelter
▪ Tornado emergency- a large violent tornado is coming get inside.
