Mali

• Mali was suffered national crop failures three years in a row. There is now a dire situation in the country and aid is required.

• Many people farm for a living and have no basic literacy.

• The road system is poor and travelling from one side of the country to the other takes days sometimes.

Burma

• Burma was hit by a category 4 cyclone. The Irrawaddy delta to the south of the country has flooded and there are concerns over secondary deaths from the event.

• Roads are impassable and the vital health messages are unable to get through about disease prevention

• What phone lines there were have gone down in the area.

Vietnam

• Vietnam wants to develop the country’s infrastructure. In particular it wants to connect the country via roads. It has no funds to do this.

• There is a large divide between rich and poor people, with poorer families tending to live in the country.

• Many educated young people choose to move away to find a better career.

South Sudan

• South Sudan has as a poor educational system. Most rural families practice nomadic farming and children do not receive a formal education in numeracy and literacy. This is preventing development.

• Many women have little knowledge of family planning and healthcare and the there is increasing pressure on resources.

Chile

• Chile has just been hit by huge storms and landslides have devastated the country. Some areas have not had a clean water supply for 12 weeks.

• The fishing industry has had 2 record low years and unemployment is high.

• Many people want the government gone due to poor decision making.

Zambia

• Zambia suffers from poor sanitation, a lack of safe water and long periods of time without rainfall.

• Children have a calcium deficiency and life expectancy is low.

• The deserts are sprawling and agricultural land is failing
