IEP Tip of the Week
Students with Disabilities Participation in Extracurricular Activities
- Participation in sports and extracurricular activities can be an important part of school life for students
- Jan. 25, 2013, the Office of Civil Rights (OCR) issued a “Dear Colleague” letter clarifying that students with disabilities be provided with equal access to extracurricular athletic activities”
- Extracurricular activities include activities other than sports, such as band, choir, zero period, etc.
Discuss this with
your SE department
IEP Tip of the Week
How to Address Requests for Participation in Extracurricular Activities?
Whenever a parent requests that her/his child with an IEP participate in an extracurricular activity, an IEP must be called to determine whether such participation
is required to be part of FAPE.- If the IEP decides that participation in an extracurricular activity is not required as part of
FAPE, the IEP must document this statement after documenting a discussion of the issue.- The IEP Notes Template should use the Prior Written Notice format to document the absence
of the need to include the extracurricular activity as part of FAPE.- The IEP then needs to document the following statement, “The participation in the
requested extracurricular activity is not required as part of FAPE or the IEP. The district staff want to ensure that the student has equal access to participate in the extracurricular
activity and is not discriminated as a student with a disability. Therefore, while not part of the IEP, the district offers the following accommodations to ensure the student’s ability to
have equal access to the extracurricular activity: ____________.”

Students with Disabilities Participation in Extracurricular Activities
Accommodations to ensure equal access into an extracurricular activity may include (but are not limited to):
- Assigning a peer to guide the student with a disability in a track event
- The ability to go first when trying out for a cheer leader’s team
- If the extracurricular activity is of academic nature, the accommodations MAY be similar to those provided in the instructional setting of the IEP, i.e. repetition of directions, extended
time, etc.
