AIRPORT AUTHORITY OF INDIA

An organization working under the ministry of civil aviation that manages all airports.

Formed on 1st April 1995 by merging the international airport authority & national authority.

The AAI manages and operates total 125 airports including 11 international , 89 domestic & 25 civil enclaves.

COMMUNICATION

It stands for

Page 6: airport authority of india ppt

6

COMMUNICATION:-It has three types :-

Air to air

Air to ground

Ground to ground

Page 7: airport authority of india ppt

This includes communication between the pilots of two aircrafts in the air. Such type of communication also uses VHF(30MHz-300MHz) and HF(3MHz-30MHz)

AIR TO AIR COMMUNICATION:-

Page 8: airport authority of india ppt

8

AIR TO GROUND:- Air to ground network provide a linkage

between aircraft based and ground based routers via satellite and other modes.

In this communication VHF (30 MHz-300MHz) frequency band is used.

GROUND TO GROUND:- It is formed by the Aeronautical Fixed

telecommunication network (AFTN),automatic message switching system(AMSS)

9

The basic principle of air navigation is the process of planning, recording and controlling the movement of a craft from one place to another.

NAVIGATIONAL - Aids

SYSTEM OF NAVIGATIONV.O.R. System :- VHF Omni directional Range antenna

Freq. band : 108 -118 MHzPower : 100WPolarization : HorizontalRange : 200Nm Antenna : alford loop

V.O.R system provides, pilot the position of aircraft w.r.t north direction from V.O.R station.

11

D.M.E. :- Distance Measurement Equipment Distance Measuring Equipment is a vital navigational Aid, which provides a pilot with visual information regarding his position (distance) relative to the ground based DME station. Normally it is collocated with either VOR or ILS.

Freq. range: 960MHz -1215MHzPolarization: verticalRange: 200NmPower : 100W

INSTRUMENT LANDING SYSTEM (ILS) The function of an ILS is to provide the PILOT or AUTOPILOT of a landing aircraft with the guidance to and along the surface of the runway. This guidance must be of very high integrity to ensure that each landing has a very high probability of success.

Mainly, ILS has two type of systems :-

LOCALIZER

GLIDE PATH ANTENNA

Page 14: airport authority of india ppt

14

LOCALIZER

Freq. band: 108-112MHzRange: 15Nm

Provides runway centerline guidance to aircraft, but not the glide slope information.

Page 15: airport authority of india ppt

15

GLIDE PATH ANTENNA

Range: 10NmFreq. band: 328-336MHz

It provides a plane align with the glide path of runway for providing elevation guidance to landing aircraft.

AIRPORT SURVEILLANCE RADAR An Airport Surveillance Radar(ASR) is a radar system used at airports to detect and display the position of aircraft in the terminal area. This system monitors the movement of all the aircrafts within its region of operation.

ASR includes primary surveillance radar and secondary surveillance radar.

Page 18: airport authority of india ppt

18

PRIMARY SURVEILLANCE RADAR:- The primary surveillance radar uses a continually rotating antenna mounted on a tower to transmit electromagnetic waves that reflect from the surface of aircraft up to 60 miles from the radar. The radar system measures the time required for radar to echo to return and the direction of the signal. From this, the system can then measure the distance of the aircraft from the radar antenna and the azimuth, or direction, of the aircraft in relation to the antenna.

Freq. Range : 2700 to 2900 MHz. Power range about 25kw

Page 19: airport authority of india ppt

19

SECONDARY SURVEILLANCE RADAR:- The secondary radar uses a second radar antenna attached to the top of the primary radar antenna to transmit and receive area aircraft data for barometric altitude, identification code, and emergency conditions.

Freq. Range : 1030 to 1090 MHz

power ranges : 160 to 1500 watts.

•Hand held metal detector

•Dore frame metal detector

Page 21: airport authority of india ppt

21

HAND HELD METAL DETECTOR

It detects all metals ,both ferrous and non-ferrous.

A metal detector is an electronic instrument which detects the presence of metal nearby.

Page 22: airport authority of india ppt

22

DOOR FRAME METAL DETECTOR

Door Frame Metal Detector walk-through metal detector which uses advanced magnetic technology to accurately pinpoint the location, size and number of hidden weapons, such as knives and guns.

Page 23: airport authority of india ppt

23

X-RAY SCANNERSIt detects three types of materials:-

MATERIAL TYPE COLOR ON MONITOR

Organic Orange

Inorganic Greeen

Metal Blue

In this a baggage put in scanner , then it would show color according to material.

Page 24: airport authority of india ppt

24

CHEMICAL SNIFFERSIt is a security device that seeks to detect explosives and illegal drugs at airports and other sensitive facilities as a part of airport security screening. This system collects the chemical molecules from the handle of bag of outer surface of bag.

Page 25: airport authority of india ppt

25

SNIFFERS DOGA detection dog or sniffer dog is a dog that is trained and works at using its senses (almost always the sense of smell) to detect substances such as explosives, illegal drugs, blood.

CONCLUSIONIn this fast moving world the airports are playing an important part in the field of transportation. Airports are required to take care of passengers, their luggage and other amenities as well the security of the passengers as well of itself.

Airport management department has to play significant role in smooth and effective functioning of terminal operation.

Airport Management discipline can be made responsible to carry out this task in coordination with other concerned department of AAI.
