Planning :

Planning establishes what, how, where and in what order work will beperformed.

The process will involve selection work methodology.

Determination of the general approach of the project.

Breaking the project into activities.

Requires the intimate knowledge of construction methods combined with theability to visualize discrete work elements.

Compactor(Vibrator Roller)

A compactor is a machine or mechanism used to reduce the size of material such as waste material or bio mass through compaction.

Page 17: Construction of Institutional Building

Bulldozer(Track)

A bulldozer is a crawler (continuous tracked tractor) equipped with a substantial metal plate (known as a blade) used to push large quantities of soil, sand, rubble, or other such material during construction .

Pile Driver A pile driver is a

mechanical device used to drive piles (poles) into soil to provide foundation support for buildings or other structures.

Foundations Foundations must be designed specifically for the house in its location, according to:

1. The size of the house, number of floors, weight of construction materials.

2. The foundation ground.

3. The height of the water table.

A safe house must have a strong foundation.

Foundation must be founded on Solid Ground.

Only broken rocks should be used in foundations, not unbroken rounded river stone orrounded seashore stone . River stone can be used if broken.

Sands & Gravel

Choice of materials affects strength of the building.

Coral sand Should never be used in any construction .

Coarse sand should be sieved to remove stones , fine particles & dust.

If the sand comes from a dirty or sea water source, it must be washed.

Gravel is best made of crushed rock, not of river rounded stones

Gravel size max. – 20 mm.

Mixing of Concrete:

Good clean ingredients with limited water makes strong Concrete.

Ensure adequate cement is added.

Mix ingredients well.

Do not used any water that is salty . This destroys concrete strength

Use only properly selected , clean ingredients

If the sands contains stones , reduce the amount of gravel added.

Making of Columns

Strong columns provide strength to the building.

All reinforced concrete columns should be made in one part before walls arebuilt up. They should not be made in small steps as walls are built up. Theyshould contain bars for wall ties and ring beams when constructed(stirrups).

Columns reinforcements should be 4 vertical bars with hoops holding themtogether . Bars should be anchored in the foundation.

Do not put pipes down the center of columns.

End of hoop steel should be bent 135 0 into the center of column.

Reinforcement

This strengthens concrete like bones in the body.

Reinforcement steel is best made of twisted deformed steel bar, ordeformed bar, rather than plain round bar. Plain round bar issignificantly weaker, and can pull through surrounding concreteand hence has a weaker effect.
