HAZARDOUS PROCESSRoof Work –
- Falls from the edge of roofs.
- Falls through opening in roofs.
- Through fragile roof materials.
Flat Roofs –
- Pitch < 100
- Guardrails & toe board if fall > 2m
- Cover the opening (adequate to take weight)
Edge protection for flat roof – diagram of what is required
Edge protection for flat roof – a real-life example
Sloping roofs: Two methods of providing edge protection
Hazardous ProcessSLOPING ROOF Pitch > 100
1. Edge protection is necessary.
2. High Guard rails.
3. Use, purpose- made crawling ladders.
FRAGILE ROOFS.
1) Asbestos cement sheeting, wired glass corrugated plastic sheets, rusted corrugated iron sheeting.
2) Use crawling ladders/ladders
3) Display warning signs.
Roof ladder for work on a sloping roof or over fragile materials
Roof ladder with ridge iron to place overroof ridge
Roofs
• Points to remember:• • Never work on a roof which is without adequate edge protection.• • Before you work on a roof make sure• you know which parts are made of• fragile material.• Never step on to a fragile roof
Hazardous Process, STEEL ERECTION • Properly DESIGN joint position, accessibility of
connections, fixing of working platforms and means of access and weights is relation to crane capacity.
• Proper SUPERVISION/ SUPERVISIONS from the MAIN CONTRACTOR.
• Storage area for steel work & materials need to be planned, not to interfere with vehicles & cranes.
• Not to work during windy/ wet weather.
• Provision of sufficient guys, props, bracing & temporary connection.
Hazardous ProcessSTEEL WORK
– avoid climbing bare steel, beam walking & straddling (feet on lower flanges)
– Use working platforms, staging, ladders.
– safety nets, safety belts & harnesses save lifes.
– REMEMBER – IF YOU CLIMB OR WALK ON BARE STEEL SOONER OR LATER YOU WILL FALL.
Mobile hydraulic platforms provide safemeans of access for steel erectors
Use of safety belts and harnesses – different ways of providing safe
anchorage points for safety lines
Use of safety belts and harnesses – different ways of providing safe
anchorage points for safety lines
Safety nets to prevent falls of steel erectors
Work over water1. WORKING PLATFORM IS SECURE. No tripping
hazards like tools, wire, timber or bricks.
2. Guard rail, toe board & access ladders.
3. Wear a safety helmet.
4. Wear a life jacket.
5. Use safety nets.
6. Life buoys flitted with lifelines are ready.
7. Marked safety board.
8. Know the routine for raising alarms & rescue drill.
Work over water
• Points to remember:• • Do not work alone when you are• working over water.• • Check the number of work regularly to• ensure that no one is missing
Hazardous Process DEMOLITIONDemolition
– Choose safe method of demolition.
– prevent unintentional collapse of building.
– written method, sequence, include drawings/ sketches.
– Use helmet, gloves, safety footwear.
– All services to be disconnected.
– Keep public away.
.
A scaffold platform from which demolition may be carried out safely
Hazardous Process
• Points to remember:• Never work on a tank or enclosed vessel
without a written permit to work.• Always check whether asbestos is present in
the building to be demolished.
Hazardous Process, Health Hazards
• Exposure to dust & fumes (plants)
– flame cutting of plant with zinc & cadmium paint, lead painted steel work
– use breathing apparatus, approved respirators & rescue equipment.
• asbestos bearing material (fire protection/ thermal insulation– use positive pressure breathing apparatus and protective
clothing.
– materials containing asbestos removed in isolation.
– safe disposal of asbestos contaminated debris.
Hazardous Process• Working In Confined Spaces
– open manholes, sewers, trenches bored pipes, pipes ducts, enclosed basements.
– danger of poisonous gases, toxic & flammable gases.
– unconsciousness, dizziness, sickness.
Hazardous Process, Confined Spaces• Precautionsa. – never enter without written permission.
b. – equipment for measuring atmosphere.
c. – forced ventilation.
d. – continuous monitoring.
e. – proper training & instruction.
f. – use rescue harness.
g. – always two persons (one always outside to offer rescue operation.
h. – proper procedure to be laid down.
i. Appropriate traffic signs while working in manholes.
When entering a confined space, use a lifeline with a second person
present and self-contained breathing apparatus apparatus
