Mise-en-scene (the cave)

Whitney Nyamayaro

LightingThis is the first shot from a clip in the movie The Descent. The POV is where they girls are finally going down the cave they have a minimal amount of light and the only light that they have, is coming from the helmet, this is where they are going down to find clues of how they are going to get out the cave.

Location These are shots of where the girls are shooting the scene themselves using the camera that they brought down to the cave to document their finding. The color of the scene has changed to a blue to make the audience look at the environment and the temperature that they are in. This makes the audience understand the situation more thinking about the location. Basically means that they are seeing what the actresses see.

Costume

This is a wide shot of all the girls as they are trying to find out where the crawler that was just behind them has gone. This is a shot of all of the girls. The color of the scene is very dull but you can briefly see the clothing of the girls. Which is typical climbing clothes and this makes the athletic individuals more interested at this point.

Props

This is a close up of Juno’s reaction when she first notices the drawings on the wall and then the lights around her have switched off. The prop that is used in this scene is the lighter that Juno used look at the drawings in the wall. This gives the girls a clue that there is a way out of the cave. This is the mot significant part of the entire scene because a clue unravels to all of the girls.

Sound

• In clip 1, the non-diegetic music that is played in the scene is at a steady pace and this changes slightly as Juno is using the light to see what is shown on the wall. As the pace starts to increase the audience comes into realization that something is going to happen. As a result, Juno is nervous of what is written on the wall and the audience had that was unsettling and resolving the thoughts that they have in their minds at the time. They are left wondering what are the girls going to do next and when will something pop out of somewhere randomly.

Sound

• The diegetic sounds that are in clip 1 the sound of the girls climbing. It gets them viewers in the heart and shocked leaving them anticipating what is going to happen next. The sounds are matching exactly what the movie is about because the outcome of them is to have the audience thinking about what they have just seen and what they want to see next.
