In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Evaluation
Colour scheme
Green is for the album hold your colour
Because the most prominent colour is green
The colour scheme for the digipak is taken from Pendulum’s three studio albums because a convention of the genre and something the audience enjoy are intertextual links to a band/artists previous work or history
Red is for the album in silico
As red is a very prominent colour on the album cover
The aqua blue is for the album Immersion
Because Immersion’s cover has an underwater theme and aqua blue is the colour used the most
This colour scheme is carried out throughout the digipak
Digipak products Album-front cover
Audience research showed that the target audience enjoyed references to earlier work by a band or artist as a way to prove their knowledge to other fans so this album cover contains several intertextual references to Pendulum’s earlier work
Sections from Pendulum’s previous album covers are in the background
The colour scheme for the logo and for the text is inspired by previous albums. This is the same for the entire digipak
Digipak products Album-back cover
The album back cover follows genre conventions because it follows a similar style to the front cover by using the same title, font, uses the same logo and the same colour scheme
The album cover has a barcode a convention for all album covers
Logos are a code for all albums. These logos are from the record company(Earstorm) and distributor (Warner Music group) that Pendulum use
Track list of 13 songs from across Pendulums previous albums and the average length of the previous albums is 13 tracks so this greatest hits album is 13 tracks long
Digipak productsCD design
This CD follows the same colour scheme as
the other products
This product incorporates pieces from Pendulum’s previous studio albums
The inner blue was cut from a section of the album “Immersion”
The middle is the foetus from the album “in silico”
The outer most section of the circle is part of the eyelash from the album “Hold your colour”
We have done this because it is a greatest hits album so it is made up of all the band’s past work , we felt the designs in the digipak should follow this idea. As well as it being a chance to satisfy fans by referencing the bands past
Digipak products DVD design
This product uses the same title with the same colours as the other products however the other colours have been inverted because it is the other side of the album physically being the other side of Pendulum the side of the band that the fans don’t see and our research showed that pendulum were a very closed band so seeing a behind the scenes video would be a good thing for fans
Like the CD the circle for the DVD is made up of different images from Pendulum’s past only in this one it is from mostly tour posters because the DVD features a behind the scenes tour diary. The non colour-inverted version of the design is below
The outer most part of the circle is from the Pendulum 2009 U.S tour poster
The middle of the circle is a section from the Pendulum Australian album preview tour
The inner most part of the circle is from a poster for the single witchcraft because the DVD contains “the making of witchcraft” about the making of the music video we made
Digipak products Inside of the album (both sides)
The space theme is an intertextual link to the band’s music videos because there are several with a space them as shown in our product research in the music videos for- Propane nightmares, Granite and Watercolour
Follows the same colour scheme as other products
It uses the font from the other products
The colours have been inverted on the DVD/back side because it is the other side of the album physically being the other side of Pendulum the side of the band that the fans don’t see and our research showed that pendulum were a very closed band so seeing a behind the scenes video would be a good thing for fans. Also the fan section of the Pendulum website is called the other side so and it has an inverted colours on the site so this is a homage to the fans
Magazine advertThis product follows the colour scheme of the digipak
It has a memorable slogan which references the bands past albums
This advert follows the conventions of magazine adverts because it promotes the release date (the fact it is out now) and a website to find out more about the album
It has logos advertising places where the song can be released
Band logo the same as the one used in the album
“Hold your colours against the wall” are lyrics from the title song of Pendulum’s first album
Immerse yourself, is a reference to Pendulums third album “Immersion”
Font is the same as our album and Pendulums other albums
Music video Our music video follows the conventions of the genre because as we found in our research the band use dark colours a lot and in our music video one of the characters in the music video and the members of the band wear black
Music VideoMy music video follows conventions because it suggests the protagonist has an underlying mental problem because he is being chased by himself. This follows the convention of the band because Pendulum’s music video “Crush” which was analysed in my research is about a character with a mental issue because he is delusional .
My video also follows the conventions of real media products because there is a mix of story and live element it also has the song playing over the top of the entire video. Also the band member appears multiple times in the video and in multiple roles which is a convention for the band
