Music Video History• Music has been around us for years and has provided us with entertainment & as the years have progressed it has had a significant

effect in the media industry. The ‘Little Lost Child’ (1894) is an example of how music videos started to develop. The song was played with projected imagery on a screen to

accompany the music.Music then often featured in many films, defined as musicals, which

developed in the 1930’s and still exist today with the likes of films such as Mamma Mia! And Rock of Ages. Screen songs were also introduced in

the 1930’s and persuaded audiences to sing along with the song, by ‘following the ball’.

In later years, artists such as The Beatles, The Jacksons & Michael Jackson produced modern music videos using motion capture. The

1980’s was a significant year for the music industry as television channels such as MTV and VH1, started 24hr broadcasts which widened

and progressed the marketing of music & its artists. When we look at music today, television hosts many music stations which offer a variety of

genre and with the use of the internet and new technology, people all over the world are able to access applications such as Youtube and Spotify, where music & music videos can be watched and uploaded.

History Of Acoustic Music• Acoustic music refers to all music that solely uses

instruments that involves no use of electronic means, such as electric guitars, synthesizers or any other electronic instruments. The actual guitar was created somewhere in the 16th century. However the actual acoustic as we know it was introduced in the 1700’s. Today a few minor developments have been made to the instrument including the amount of strings and variations of the guitar itself. When played live or in front of any audience, electric amplifiers may still be used to increase the volume and amplify the sound.During the 1990’s, MTV Unplugged, became an increasingly popular television programme as artists could perform their music in front of a small audience. Today, the programme still airs and many artists adapt certain songs to an acoustic form.

Acoustic & Music Video Together• Since acoustic music was never officially

announced or noticed as a new defined genre, it is hard to identify and create a timeline of artists that combined both acoustic music and video together. However, looking at recent years, some of the music videos began to arise in the early 1900’s with artists such as John Fahey, Leo Kottke & Phill Keaggy. These artists began creating videos that were filmed live instead of an actual production, like John Fahey’s ‘Poor Boys Long Way From Home’. A lot has developed since then with the ways acoustic music videos have been represented with current artists such as The Plain White T’s & Ed Sheeran; with music videos like ‘Hey There Delilah’ and ‘The A-Team’.

Album Cover History• Album art covers were first introduced around 1939-1940 and were initially drawn illustrations.

Developments later came in the 1950’s when technological advancements in photography arose and illustrations were replace with head shots and scenes of everyday life. Then and nowadays, album covers are and have been a way to publicise and advertise the album itself as well as making the artists name more popular. However, in todays music world, there are typical genre conventions which are usually seen in the album cover. For example, Pop/R&B/HipHop will most likely use a cover with the artist in frame, where as Rock/Indie/Acoustic music is known to create unique and creative illustrations or collages.

Magazine Advertisement• Magazine advertisements have been around since the first

ever magazines published, and since then has carried out with the same purpose of persuading an audience to buy a product. Depending on the magazine, it will feature certain adds that have a link with the target audience of the magazine to ensure that notice is taken. In the 19th century, magazine advertising changed very little and styles were kept very similar where the advertisements were lefts to the last few back pages. Soon after a new era of advertising began where advertising was used to tailor the needs of a specific group of people, which read the magazine.

Influences.• From all the research I have undertaken I feel that I have learnt

a lot about how my platform and genre began and grew. This means that I can take what I know now about more recent acoustic music videos, and project those conventions throughout making the video, advertisement & album cover.

• I think that when I create a video, I will make a storyline up and base it around what the lyrics mean whereas older acoustic music videos, just filmed a one shot video of them performing.

• My album cover should be made to look as unique as possible, however, should still conform to what my target audience likes and wants.
