Sherlock Confronting Moriaty

Page 3: Mise En Scene - Sherlock

SETTINGNot fully lit, shadowed, dark, probably night. They’re at a swimming pool. (Poster saying ‘Splash’, steps to pool, changing cubicles, large water-filled pool which looks suspiciously like a swimming pool.)Seems abandoned. All these aspects add up to create suspense, fear and a sense of insecurity an evil.

LIGHTING/COLOURAll very blue. Blue, white and black are the predominant colours. It is lighter where the characters are, darkerin the rest of the shot.Sherlock’s face is shadowed. He is weaker,he is hiding something, he is made to lookmore challenging.Blue is used for dramatic effect, it is cold,it is night, it is scary.

FIGURE MOVEMENTSherlock moves confidently when Moriaty is there, facing up to him, but moves a lot quicker and frantically when he is gone.Watson is very still at first. But then is very hurried when Moriaty goes. He keeps a brave face, and I scared of the bomb, but is quick in getting it off. He is then quite stuttered in movement, the shock had a lasting effect.Moriaty’s movements are slow which creates a sense of power and knowledge.

EXPRESSIONMoriaty is quite a comical but weird character in Sherlock. His expressions are exaggerated and animated. They’re also quite creepy and evil.Sherlock’s face movement is quite minimalbut always serious, and he is always thinking. Watson’s expression doesn’t seem to changethat much, it remains his trademark ‘slightly scared an confused’ look.

PROPS

There are two props used in this clip, the bomb and the gun. If you didn’t know what ‘Sherlock’ was you would be tempted to think you were watching a spy show.the Gun: It’s black and metallic, it’s modernday, city gun, looks quite new.The Bomb: The various components and wires enforce a futuristic feel. It seems likemodern technology and is what you imagine a bomb to look like.

MAKE UP

They all look quite smart, clean-shaven.Dealing with more ‘high-end’ criminals, not mixing with gangs, etc…
