PHOTOSHOOT AND IMAGE CHOICE

Page 3: My Music Magazine

I didn’t use this image because its not suitable for the front cover. The background is too busy and there is a person walking in the background. Also, the importance of the model is taken away because of her positioning. The denotation of the model sitting on the floor could have the connotation of less importance. I don’t like the facial expression of the model as her smile seems a little fake and not suitable for the magazine.

I didn’t choose this picture because of the background and the models eye contact. The background is too busy and there are people walking around. The model isn't looking directly at the camera, which is what I was looking for. Also, the model is turned away and this makes the picture unsuitable for the front cover.

Page 4: My Music Magazine

This picture wasn’t chosen because the model is looking away from the camera. I needed direct eye contact for the front cover. Also, because the model is turning away, her positioning on the cover wouldn’t have followed the eye flow. If I used this picture, the model would have taken too much space up as the picture was taken too high up.

For this picture, I tried to make my model laugh. Although it does look real, It doesn’t look like it belongs on the cover of a music magazine. I prefer the model to be straight faced and the picture was taken to high up to be the cover as I would have lied the text to be covering the models head.

I didn’t use this picture because I caught the mode off – guard. From her hand and facial expressions the model looks unsure and this wouldn’t be good for the front cover. This picture could potentially be good for inside my magazine, I could use it on my Table of contents to show behind the scenes of the photoshoot.

I like this picture but I don’t feel its suitable for the music magazine. On typcial music magazines the model tends to have a straight expression but I decided to try out a more relaxed pose for my model. I prefer a staight face to the laughing one.

Chosen Picture

I chose this picture because I felt it was really suitable for the magazine cover. The model has direct contact with the camera which is typical of many music magazines. The background is plain and simple and I really liked the colour of the bricks. The facial expression is suitable and appears to be more suitable for the magazine as the model seems like a more of a ‘serious’ musician to when the model was pretending to laugh. The positioning of the model is really good too, there's plenty of room for the masthead and the kickers. With Photoshop, I can change the lighting to make it appear more sunny.

FIRST DRAFT

Page 8: My Music Magazine

Initially, I made two versions of the magazine. This is because I wasn’t sure whether to do it in black and white or colour. I tried to make both the magazines very simplistic whilst still trying to look like a mainstream music magazine. I kept the name of my model the same as this is more realistic.

Chosen First draft.

I chose this cover because I feel its better than the black and white one. Although, I do like some aspects of the black and white one, in particular the small box I used to show more artists. I like the colour scheme of this because it looks like a mix of pop and rock and that’s what I was looking for. The people who answered my questionnaire also said they like black, white and red the most as a colour scheme. I made a splatter just to include a small bit of insight to the magazine. I made the drip using the smudge tool on Photoshop. Using Photoshop, I also modified the model, I made her skin appear smoother and I also highlighted her lips to match the red colour scheme and changed the colour of her eyes to match her necklace. I also took out the colour from the background as I felt the red from the bricks was too busy and this makes the musician on the cover stand out even more. I lightened up the picture to bring a sunnier feel to it.

FEEDBACK

Page 12: My Music Magazine

Could make the title bigger and put it behind her head.

This splatter isn't in proportion to the rest of the magazine. Make it smaller. You could make the whole picture black and white, layer it and rub out the black and white instead.

Add the issue number, price and website to the barcode.

The date should be added, either under the title or with the barcode. Try to add a selling line.

The colour of the lips has gone too far over, try to make it more realistic.

SECOND DRAFT

I changed the colour of her lips and softened the light on that layer to make it seem more natural.

I made the title bigger and rubbed out any parts in front of the model.

I added a price, issue number and website address to the barcode and changed its positioning

I changed the size of the splatter and the positing and deleted the kicker and explanatory because I felt it was too busy.

I added the small box from the other first draft to give more on an insight to the magazine.

I added a date under the title to make it look more professional.

I lined up the text above and below ‘Sara Killeen’ so that it wasn’t overlapping.

I changed the colour of the ‘Sara Killeen’ text to match the other red on the page.
