FEBRUARY 23-26, 2017
AN INITIATIVE BY THE CENTRE FOR SOCIAL INNOVATION
WHAT IS TORONTO FOR EVERYONE? Toronto for Everyone (TO4E) is an initiative by the Centre for Social Innovation, celebrating the city we want to create together. It’s a community where we all belong, where we can see ourselves, and where each of our cultures, ideals, and values form the vibrant fabric of our city. We believe that Toronto can be the global model for inclusivity and social innovation. Honest Ed’s may be closing its doors, but Ed’s legacy is his unique ability to foster community can carry on. For years, Ed opened his doors to immigrant families, hosted street parties and gave away free turkeys. Now it’s time for us to carry the torch through all of our city and community building initiatives, starting with An Honest Farewell this February 2017. #TO4E
ABOUT: Centre For Social
Innovation Founded in 2004 in Toronto, CSI is the first co-working space in the world. As a successful non-profit social enterprise, CSI is home to over 1000 social mission organizations working across every sector to foster a world where we put people and planet first. We believe in being scrappy, keeping it real, and having fun while making social change.
We build community.
6 Locations across North America 10 Years in operation 75 Government & Corporate Partners 1000 Social mission organizations 1700 Social innovators
For over 65 years, Honest Ed’s has been a second home to immigrants setting up a new life in Toronto. Whether it was buying your first winter coat, or stocking up on ceramic mugs, there was something for everyone at Honest Ed’s.
Ed Mirvish, the wheeler dealer shopkeeper and host of the annual turkey giveaway, captured the minds and hearts of Torontonians everywhere, turning the bargain basement into a cultural icon and historical landmark.
In February 2017, the Centre for Social Innovation will host An Honest Farewell: the first, last and only event at Honest Ed’s before it goes. The 4-day
event will pay homage to this special Toronto institution, while envisioning the next chapter of its impact on our city.
And now it’s time to say goodbye.
AN HONEST FAREWELL
Growing from the humble roots of a small storefront into an iconic landmark, Honest Ed’s represents the hustle and transformation of a city and its people. Its closing is symbolic of Toronto’s next chapter; one of coming into its own.
An Honest Farewell will celebrate the beauty of Honest Ed’s past, while drawing a vision for the future. It’s the invitation to co-create a playground rooted in our ideals and idiosyncrasies.
Honest Ed’s was for everyone.
Companies and organizations that place inclusivity as a priority, both in the workplace and in the design of services, products and spaces, are winning with the talent and innovation that comes from fresh voices, multi-faceted perspectives and an internal culture of belonging.
Diversity is our asset. Inclusivity is our choice.
How is your organization showcasing its commitment to inclusivity?
Toronto is experiencing a seismic shift in grounding into a recognized global identity and brand. From T.dot and the Six, to We The North and Home is Toronto, citizens are wearing their city stripes, loud and proud.
Toronto for Everyone wants to be part of this movement.
- Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister, Canada
Compassion, acceptance, and trust; diversity and inclusion—these are the things that have made Canada strong and free.
Not just in principle, but in practice.
The entire Honest Ed’s building will be transformed into a four-day interactive experience that will bring together a collaboration of artistic disciplines to honour the past, present and future.
