#Q3 What kind of media institution might distribute

your media product and why?

Distribution - Distribution is key part of selling the

magazine. Once the magazine, has designed, written and compiled the magazine they hire a distributor. The distributor looks for a selling point e.g. HMV or WHSmith and the stocks it. Not only does the distributor look for shops and market places for the product but it also markets the product. In this case it would promote the magazine to the correct market audience. For instance if

- All the magazines on this page are distributed in the way I would like to distribute mine.

- NME is distributed by IPC. IPC is the largest distribution company in the UK

- “IPC Media produces over 60 iconic media brands, with print alone reaching almost two thirds of UK women and 42% of UK men almost 26 million UK adults – while our websites collectively reach over 20 million users every month.” (Taken from IPCmedia.com). IPC would be a perfect distribution company to distribute my magazine. NME is a main competitor and as they target their market well, IPC must know the right selling points that are how to reach my target market correctly.

- I’ve produced a sophisticated life magazine with a key focus on music. This means I would not go to any cheap distributor but to a specialist. For instance the magazine ‘Little White Lies’ key selling point is subscription, they promote in small independent shops such as 'rise‘. Although I couldn’t find anywhere online where it says who distributes ‘Little White Lies’, I know that if I were to distribute my magazine, it would be through a company much like the firm who distribute theirs. The reason for this is that the distribution company that they use will already know where to and how to target such niche markets. Which is perfect for my magazine.
