Saw 4 opening scene analyses

Saw IV is a 2007 Canadian-American horror film and midquel to 2006's Saw III. It was directed by

Darren Lynn Bousman and written by newcomers Patrick Melton, Marcus Dunstan and Thomas

Fenton. The film was released in North America on October 26, 2007. The film's North American

release date followed the series' tradition that the films be released the Friday before or on

Halloween of each year.

First of all I will analyse the opening scene and how discuss how different aspects of how the movie

was put together by camera, mise en scene, editing and sound.

At the first 16 seconds of the clip we see the inside of what looks to be a key whole and you can see

all of the different components moving inside, at the same time low key music is played which can

therefore give us the effect that it’s going to be a horror movie. Finally we see the logo on Lionsgate

who are an American entertainment company.

Next we see the logo of Twisted Pictures who are an American based production company. We first

see the text of Twisted Pictures and then all of sudden some barb wire warps round and makes a

scary noise which could make many people jump.

The first camera shot we see is a close up shot of a beetle on somebody’s hand which immediately

gives the effect that it’s a horror movie and something scary is about to happen, all of a sudden the

camera shot dissolves into the title sequences where its shows who produced the movie “Burg,

Koules, Hoffman. The camera then goes back to the footage where you can see somebody sat on a

chair but you can only see half of the screen as the rest of it is darkened out, soon after the full

screen darkens out. Then again it goes to the title sequence where it says “a film by Kevin Greutert”.

Again we see the beetle on somebody’s hand then the camera pans up to the woman’s face, where

we can see this helmet mechanism on her head which looks like some sort of torture weapon. You

can tell that the woman is in some pain by the way she is moving around and holding her head.
