History of the Genres

• The rock scene grew in the 50s with the rock and roll era. The punk scene began in the 70s with British bands The Clash and Sex Pistols dominating it, with the hardcore sub-genre being popularised by bands such as Black Flag and Dead Kennedys in the early 80s.

• Punk has always had a significant subculture, associated with socially aware lyrics, left-wing politics and general activism.

• In the 90s bands such as The Offspring and Green Day began to become more mainstream, popularising the pop-punk genre. This is often confused with punk rock by mainstream audiences but is generally accepted as being extremely different.

• Bad Religion have been a band since 1981 and have been opening for Rise Against on recent tours, being apart of the “revival” of punk rock while Bad Religion have been there for the majority of the time.

• Bands such as Foo Fighters are known as pure rock bands and well respected by mainstream and underground audiences alike.
