OPTIMISTIC 12 POINT TEDBIGVIZ Were keen to hear your impressions of
the BIGVIZ. If youre interested in ob- taining high-res versions of
the sketches or adding your connections and themes to be included
in future versions of this document, please feel free to contact me
at [email protected]. I look forward to our conversation.
Please visit www.autodesk.com/TED2008 to obtain updates and see the
movies of the BIGVIZ in action. Welcome to the BIGVIZ, a visual
depiction of the big ideas presented at TED2008. From February 27th
to March 1st, 2008 over 50 leaders in technology, entertainment and
design shared their ideas, passion and brilliance to an audi- ence
of 1600 in Monterey, California, and Aspen, Colorado. This e-book
strives to capture the spirit of the mainstage presentations by
repre- senting the presenters ideas in the form of loose sketches,
concept maps and visualizations. Our intent is to provide a rich
graphic record of TED. For those fortunate to at- tend this years
conference, the BIGVIZ will hopefully remind you of the central
concepts, big ideas, as well as the little ones. Our graphic
representations are idiosyncratic, expressive, rather than
objective. Wed like to thank our talented visual cartographers,
David Sibbet and Kevin Richards, who, through their herculean
efforts, rendered the firestorm of TED big ideas into a seemingly
endless stream of meaningful colorful images. Special thanks to
John Schmier of Autodesk who made the technology work seamlessly
and to Jeff Han and Phil Davidson from Perceptive Pixel for
rendering the sketches so magnificently on the multi-touch display.
Thanks to Scott Rawlings at Wacom Technology Corporation for
providing their leading edge design tools. And, of course, wed like
to express our deep gratitude to Chris Anderson, Tom Rielly,
William Allen, Janet and Katherine Mc- Cartney, Rebecca Berry and
the entire TED team for supporting the wild idea we generated one
warm Friday after- noon in New York to make TED ideas visible,
interactive and persistent. BIGVIZ Making TED Ideas Visible 01 11

OPTIMISTIC 12 POINT TEDBIGVIZ Though the ideas representated in the
BIGVIZ sketches are self- explanatory, there is an underly- ing
structure to the visual repre- sentations. The image and text
renderings are color coded. Technologi- cal ideas are generally
rendered in orange; political and social messages in red; business
and economic themes in blue; envi- ronmental content in green; and
spirtual messages in purple. This system will let you quickly
identify the context of a visualization. You can use the section
labels and page numbers at the bottom of this document to freely
naviga- tion throughout the BIGVIZ. THESKETCHES Finding Meaning in

OPTIMISTIC 12 POINT TEDBIGVIZ Two artists, David Sibbet, and Kevin
Richards, payed close at- tention to the TED presenters ideas,
stories, and images, spon- taneously converting them into digital
sketches and diagrams using Autodesk SketchBook Pro software,
drawing on Wacom Cintiq 21UX tablets. In the TED simulcast room,
these sketches were made visible on a Perceptive Pixel multi-touch
wall with custom software. Visit www.autodesk.com/ TED2008 to see
this technology experiment at play. THETECHNOLOGY Analog Sketching
