Sauk Centre Taekwondo AcademyPromotion Testing Curriculum Guide

February 22, 2012

Dear Parent and Student,

After many years of students asking for help with organizing curriculum material and with help writing it down for assistance in practicing, I have decided to put together a guide for you all. The purpose of this guide is not to give you all the material but to assist you in recording the material correctly.

Each page is designed to be “Guided Notes,” meaning I have guided you in writing the correct notes, not given it to you. You will still need to get the material from me in order to get the correct notes. The structure below will mean that you do not have to remember the entire sequence of events but the techniques within them.

For parents, I hope the Guide will help you practice with your student. Many times I have heard students say that they tried to practice with an adult but because of the lack of knowledge of the material, the adult was not of great assistance. I do believe this guide will change that. With this in hand, you will be able to probe your students memory of the material they have practice and find that they do indeed know their material. This will help with their recall of the material come Test Day.

If there are any questions about this Guide or the material within, please do not hesitate to ask. You can contact me via telephone (320) 761-9008, e-mail: [email protected] through the many social media channels currently available including Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and YouTube. Thank you very much. Train Hard!

Respectfully,

Mr. Josh Waltzing

Introduction:

In the following pages, you will find all the material needed for your next Promotion Test. For this block you will be requested to know the following sets of material.

Pattern Beginner Kicking Combinations Basic One Steps Self-Defense

Each student will be required to execute a different amount of material depending on their current belt rank.

Patterno Beginners – 4 Way Pattern Low Blocko White Belt – 4 Way Pattern Middle & High Blocko Orange Belt – Kibon Hyungo Orange Trim Belt – Palgwe IL Chango Yellow Belt – Palgwe Yi Chang

Beginner Kicking Combinationso Beginners - #1 - #4o White Belt - #1 - #4o Orange Belt - #1 - #6o Orange Trim Belt - #1 - #6o Yellow Belt #1 - #8

As you can see from the outline above each belt rank does the same material as the rank below but adds a technique or two in addition. While the high ranking students are doing the same material as the lower ranking students, they technique will be evaluated differently. As students advance in belt rank, they will be evaluated more highly on their accuracy, power, balance, focus, and timing of each technique.

PatternEach student will be required to learn and perform a series of techniques designed to mimic self-defense situations. This series of techniques is called a pattern, form, hyung, or poomsae.

Many times students do not understand the use of patterns and only go through the obligatory motions. Patterns are the foundation of ALL martial arts technique. Patterns are ageless, there are pictographic examples of movements found in current patterns on tomb walls of Korean kings from thousands of years ago. These movements teach the fundamental ways to block, punch, kick, and evade an attacker while maintaining perfect balance, rhythm, focus, power, control, accuracy, and breathing.

There are two primary types of patterns executed in our style of Taekwondo, Palgwe and Taeguk. At some point, you may see both types of patterns happening in the same class. Palgwe patterns are the elder of the pattern sets and have their origins in Shotokan Karate patterns. They teach very traditional, powerful deep stances and the development of incredible power in both blocks and strikes. Being the older of the set, Palgwes have unfortunately been subject to much distortion over the years. As the years have elapsed, it is hard to determine which version of the Palgwes are the originals. We teach the version shown to us and even that has gone through some slight changes back and forth in the last several years.

Taeguk patterns are much newer and were developed by the World governing body for Taekwondo called Kukkiwon. They were created as a method of teaching essential sparring movements and utilize shorter stances quicker movements. These patterns will develop speed and quickness of foot while also teaching combination movements of hands and feet.

As states above, there are two primary types of patterns but in our school, you will usually only see the Palgwe series in class. Below is the breakdown of what each belt rank will be using for patterns for their upcoming belt promotion test.

Beginners – 4 Way Pattern Low Block White Belt – 4 Way Pattern Middle and High Block Orange Belt – Kibon Hyung Orange Trim Belt – Palgwe IL Chang Yellow Belt – Palgwe Yi Change

In this guide, the first three patterns have been included for students Beginner through White belt. The other patterns can be found in other guides. There are many resources of patterns available online and you are encouraged to use the resources you find. Grandmaster Richard Chun has the best demonstrations of the Palgwe series. Although difficult to find online, they are excellent and follow the same movement sequence as our patterns.
