Market Requirement• India is investing billions in the clean technology and is a key market e.g. Smart
Cities initiative by the Modi Government.
• 10 out of the top 20 countries in global cleantech innovations are from Europe. (Source: Cleantech Innovation Index 2014).
• There have been significant policy and regulatory changes in the last 5 years driven by the government to enforce business to comply and incentivise investors in this line of business.
• Internal migration and urbanization projections estimate 400 million additional urban dwellers in Indian cities by 2050.
• India is facing a rising energy deficit and growing industries which are fast-depleting the country’s natural resources. As a result, India expects by 2035 to spend almost $30 billion on renewables and $1.7 trillion on energy supply infrastructure.

Problems
Long term entry vs. immediate cash flows for innovative EU companies• SMEs cannot tap the opportunities across India• Long gestation period but physical presence is key
EU Hi-tech mindset vs. Indian frugal technologies requirements• Solutions developed with Europe as a lead market• Indian conditions very different and technologies often not competitive
Access to consortia and projects • India requires solutions and technologies but these are often unable to
access the market alone
Access to innovation & EU networks• Indian companies have low R&D expenditures and struggle to find the right
technologies for their requirements• IPR issues & trust deficit
