cannot sustain life.

EXAMPLES OF DEVELOPMENT FOR SUSTAINABILITY

-> Sustainable cities

-> Eco-industrial parks

SUSTAINABLE CITIES

A sustainable city considers the natural environment in its design and aims to reduce the input of energy, water and other resources, as well as minimizing the generation of waste and other environmental disturbances.

SUSTAINABLE CITY EXAMPLE :: VITORIA-GASTEIZ

Page 7: Arun Kumar Mishra (UPSIDC) on Sustainable Development & Overview

VITORIA-GASTEIZ - SPAIN

Implemented policy of mixed land use

Policy of high density development along its major transport routes.

Advance and upgraded public transport system to support more population to concentrate along these high density circuits.

This approach leaves green belts still provide habitat for wildlife and recreational areas for people.

The city has a high proportion of green public areas, ensuring that the entire population lives within 300m of an open green space

SUSTAINABILITY FOCUS: WATER CONSERVATION

Vitoria-Gasteiz has an ambitious objective of reducing domestic water consumption to below 100 litres per capita per day. Already today,

water consumption has decreased steadily from 1999 to 2009.

FAST FACTS: VITORIA-GASTEIZ

In 2005, the “Sustainability Observatory of Vitoria-Gasteiz” was created to promote sustainable development at local level in a holistic way.

Since 2007, Vitoria-Gasteiz has participated in the working group of Ekitalde, with the other two Capital cities of the Basque Country (Bilbao and San Sebastian) in order to introduce GPP procurement criteria

Since 2008 the use of public transport in Vitoria-Gasteiz has increased by 44 percent

The city's 2010-2020 Plan against Climate Change - aims to reduce 25 percent of the greenhouse gas emissions in the next eight years

More than 12,000 schoolchildren have joined the ‘Adopt a tree and grow with it’ campaignCredits :http://www.iclei-europe.org/members/member-in-the-spotlight/archive/vitoria-gasteiz/

ECO-INDUSTRIAL PARKS

Areas where industries are placed together to co-operatively manage the use of resources and environmental impacts caused by their operations. By sharing resources they improve efficiency and create less waste.

ECO-INDUSTRIAL PARK ::KALUNDBORG, DENMARK

Page 12: Arun Kumar Mishra (UPSIDC) on Sustainable Development & Overview

WHAT IS SO SPECIAL

This eco-industrial park has a number of businesses that utilize the by-products of other manufacturers. The waste created by a power station in the park is used to make cement by another firm. Other businesses use heat generated by the power plant and cement factory for some of their processes.

Kalundborg was the first example of separate industries grouping together to

gain competitive advantage by material exchange, energy exchange, information exchange, and/or product exchange. The very term, Industrial Symbiosis (IS) was first defined by a station manager in Kalundborg as "a cooperation between different industries by which the presence of each…increases the viability of the others, and by which the demans of society for resource savings and environmental protection are considered

OTHER EXAMPLES

In America, Interface Inc., a major carpet tile producer has greatly improved its ecological footprint. By using recycled and more environmentally friendly products, and more efficient manufacturing processes, they have reduced their energy and water consumption. The levels of waste, particularly hazardous waste have also been greatly reduced.
