RMFA President’s Message
Festival 2022 – Back on Stage!
Welcome to our Festival 2022 in the University of Regina Conservatory of the Performing Arts. After a forced hiatus in 2020 (cancelled) and 2021 (100% virtual), we are hosting a live festival. Because of the uncertainty around the time of registrations we are allowing recorded performances; so Festival 2022 is a hybrid – and quite a challenge.
I would like to thank all of the teachers, parents and registrants for their enthusiastic support of the festival movement here in Regina, making our return to the stage possible. We did change our pricing structure this year in anticipation of increased costs for adjudicators and their travel/living expenses as well as the costs of venues. Moving to an age-specific pricing structure has helped us encourage our youngest participants to perform on stage, while not increasing costs too much for our seniors. All of us have felt the pinch of increasing prices in the last year. The Board recognizes that the parents of each performer have stepped up to help us cover the costs of Festival 2022 through these increased registration costs. Thank you!
While it may seem at this moment that our COVID risk profile is low, it was not always the case earlier in the year. Therefore, the Board has set policy for Festival 2022 that is different from prior years. First and foremost, masks are required in all performance spaces, the festival office and when dealing with our volunteers. This is to ensure, as far as we are able, a safe and healthy festival. Hand sanitizer will be available in all Festival spaces; adjudicators and secretaries will have wipes for their tables; keyboards will be cleaned. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.
I wish to thank all of our volunteers. Our scrutineers have reviewed all entries; our scholarship committee has reviewed the criteria for each and every scholarship on offer; our fundraising committee has worked very hard to bring in generous donations to cover the operating costs of the festival and the association. We will have Door Monitors and Secretaries again! Festival 2022 brings us back to an “all-hands-on-deck” event.
Festival 2022 is, for the most part, held in the newly refurbished Conservatory for the Performing Arts. This was originally planned for Festival 2020. So, as they say, better late than never!
Our Choral performances will be held at Christ Lutheran Church on the 28th of April; Pipe Organ will remain a virtual competition this year.
There is a big surprize in Festival 2022. The MLT-Aikins (formerly the Kinsmen) competition and the Lions competition will be held in Darke Hall! We are truly “back on stage”. If you have not yet had an opportunity to see and experience this marvellous space, please plan on attending these two competitions on the 7th of May. The MLT-Aikins is in the afternoon; the Lions in the evening.
Finally, the Board would like to acknowledge the superlative work of our Production Manager, Robin Tinani. Last year she led the challenge of taking us into the virtual festival world. This year she is again pushing us forward, moving us ever closer to a paper-less festival. Each year, with her help, we strive to improve the festival experience for everyone – Enjoy!
Susan Gorges, President, RMFA

Get Acquainted with the Regina Music Festival
The Music Festival has been held in Regina for the benefit of our young musicians for decades. It is organized and produced by a volunteer board. The festival is financed by entry fees, and corporate and individual donations. Hundreds of hours are involved in organizing the festival from registration, data checking, scheduling, obtaining scholarships, program compilation and many other activities. The board is always looking for help and would welcome your assistance. The RMFA is a non-profit corporation and a registered charity. We welcome donations to assist us in our operations OR to be awarded to students in the form of scholarships. The Board, on the recommendation of the adjudicators, distributes scholarships totaling over $20,000 yearly.
FESTIVAL OFFICE During the year we do not have a physical office. During the festival itself, our office can be found in room 118 in the Conservatory of Performing Arts on College Avenue. We would love if you would come say hi! As well, you can always phone 306-581-8929 to leave a message or contact us by email at [email protected] or through our website www.reginamusicfestival.org.
PROGRAMS outlining the festival competitions are available to download and view from our website www.reginamusicfestival.org.
ADJUDICATION: Professional adjudicators are hired by our governing organization, Saskatchewan Music Festival Association. These adjudicators are employed to provide their expert opinion on each student’s performance. Firstly, they will provide a written assessment of each performance. These adjudication sheets will be available through the performers' Music Festival Suite Account. Secondly, they will give a verbal address to the performers and offer constructive advice. First and second place winners and the respective marks will be announced by the adjudicator at the end of the class. All other competitors will receive a letter ranking.
Letter Relative Mark Standard A+ 88 or more High Distinction A 85 to 87 Considerable Merit A- 80 to 84 Shows Merit B 75 to 79 Moderately Good C 74 or less Less than Adequate
The RMFA will support and be bound by the assessments made by the adjudicators in every circumstance. We ask that you do not contact the adjudicator. We always appreciate your feedback. What can be improved, changed or phased out? Your feedback allows us to improve year over year. Please email your observations, questions and suggestions to [email protected].
Requests for additional classes for the 2023 Regina Music Festival must be submitted in writing to the Festival Committee before September 30, 2022. Email: [email protected].

Diana Wiens
Piano 2 Adjudicator
Diana Wiens was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Music studies, which began at the age of
seven, included piano instruction with Dr. Lyell Gustin of Saskatoon. Upon completing her
Associate Degree in Piano Performance with the Royal Conservatory of Music, and graduating
from the University of Saskatchewan, she taught elementary and junior high for three years before
pursuing further music studies in Europe. During her five years in Germany, she studied,
performed widely, and for the last two years instructed piano at the Nordwestdeutsche Musik
Akademie and at the University of Bielefeld. In 1974, she returned to Canada to accept a position
on Music Faculty at the University of Guelph, Ontario. Here, she and her husband initiated the
first applied music courses in piano and voice, both of which continue to be offered today. Since
1975 they have lived in Edmonton. From 1988 – 2009, Diana Wiens was Adjunct Professor in the
Music Department at Taylor University College in Edmonton; for 8 of those years she co-chaired
the Department. She is in demand as an adjudicator and workshop clinician across Canada;
festivals include the Kiwanis Music Festival of Greater Toronto, Vancouver Kiwanis Music Festival,
and Provincial Music Festival final competitions in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Currently, Diana
Wiens is artistic director and conductor of the Te Deum Singers, a community choir in Edmonton,
Alberta. She was invited to conduct this choir in a performance of Mozart’s “Vesperae Solennes de
Confessore” at Carnegie Hall, New York in April of 2020; unfortunately, Covid-19 cancelled those
plans.

Dianne Gryba
Vocal 2 Adjudicator
Dianne Gryba resides in North Battleford, Saskatchewan where she works as a teacher,
accompanist and choral director. As well as maintaining a thriving studio of voice and piano
students, Dianne co-teaches musical theatre classes at the Dance Connection with director,
Virginia Winterhalt. She is proud of the many students who have gone on to pursue careers in
classical music or music theatre. Dianne has a great love of choral singing. With JoAnne Kasper,
she has directed and accompanied several groups in the Battlefords including the Gallery Singers,
Battlefords Children’s Choirs, and Kamala Youth Choir. The choruses have been honoured with
local and provincial awards, and Kamala has taken part in many wonderful festivals in
Saskatchewan and beyond, including the Voices West events, which were initiated by Scott
Leithead of Edmonton. Dianne has played and performed with her duo-piano partner, Bonnie
Nicholson, for almost 3 decades. This joyful collaboration has always been a highlight in Dianne’s
musical life. In 2016, Dianne and Bonnie joined with Chris Kelly and Janice Paterson, and
initiated a summer school for young pianists and vocalists. SAVP (Summer Academy for Voice and
Piano) is now held annually on the University of Saskatchewan campus in Saskatoon. Ms. Gryba is
active in the Saskatchewan Music Festival Association as president of the Battlefords Festival and
as a provincial board member. Dianne enjoys the rich variety in her musical life and is thankful for
the many opportunities she has had to collaborate with exceptional musicians in her career so far.
She and her husband Greg continue to be involved in the lives of their three grown children and
their families.
