For 16 years, nature-loving film lovers have been making a pilgrimage to the Baltic Sea resort of Eckernförde to enjoy the breathtaking beauty of nature at GREEN SCREEN. A beauty that is unfortuna-tely threatened. The festival also shows thiP. Topics such as the extinction of species, the climate crisis and the necessary protection of nature get a stage. That is important. Because films can vividly show the consequences of man-made climate change and nature pollution and thus sensitize the audience to potential conflicts and solutionP. They thus make an artistic and aesthetic contribution to the fight against the climate crisis and for the beauty of nature. But film can do even more. It can make its own contribution and reduce the CO2 footprint that results from the production and exploitation of filmP. Together with the film subsidies of the federal states, the German Federal Film Board and the Green Shooting Working Group, the Federal Ministry of Culture is pursuing the goal of implementing uniform minimum ecological standards for the production of audio-visual content throughout Germany. In this way, we are working in close cooperation with all stakeholders to ensure that, as of January 01, 2023, that production in Germany will be predominantly „green“. This is a big, important joint steP. So that our beautiful nature has a future. I would like to thank everyone involved for their commitment and wish visitors an inspiring cinematic experience.

WILLKOMMEN ZUM16. INTERNATIONALEN NATURFILMFESTIVALGREEN SCREENIN ECKERNFÖRDE
Dear visitors of the GREEN SCREEN Festival,
Already for the 16th time the green carpet is rolled out in Eckernförde and this is the annual kick-off for the
Green Screen Festival, whose core is the international film competition. Filmmakers from 43 countries have
submitted 251 nature films for the 2022 competition. In addition to many guests, we expect over 200 filmma-
kers and producers from all over the world to meet in Eckernförde, exchange ideas and make joint plans for
new projectP. The diverse youth offerings round out the great festival program and provide an appropriate
forum for the next generation.
This year, for the first time, there is a country focus on France. Numerous French films enrich the program and
an exchange is sought in a workshop with filmmakers from France.
We are happy about the success story of the festival, which has become one of the most popular festivals for
nature documentaries in Europe and an important international meeting point for professionals.
We thank all film activists for their productions as well as all those who make GREEN SCREEN possible. We
wish all visitors, filmmakers and guests an eventful stay in Eckernförde and great film momentP. We thank all
volunteers who make this festival what it is - UNIQUE!

WELCOME TO THE16TH INTERNATIONALEN WILDLIFE FILM FESTIVALGREEN SCREENIN ECKERNFÖRDE
BIENVENUE AU16e FESTIVAL INTERNATIONAL DU FILM NATUREGREEN SCREENÀ ECKERNFÖRDE
„Ooooooh, it s so cute!“ This is how both children and adults spontaneously express themselves when looking at the GREEN SCREEN Poster 2022. What is meant is the young sea turtle whose large eye seems to be looking at uP. But if you look closer, you can see numerous birds against the bright sky, predators for which the tiny turtles that have just hatched are welcome food. Thus, many lives that have just begun end after only a few minuteP. The wilderness is no pony farm! But what actually is „wilderness“ and how do people relate to it? For centuries wilderness was fought against by humans, exploited, made subject to them. Now that it hardly exists anymore in many parts of the world, we recognize what is connected with its loss and try in different ways to restore nature and its diversity. This year‘s Eckernförder Gespräche are dedicated to this topic, as are some of the films in the festival program. How much wilderness do we need? How much wilderness do we really want? And where? GREEN SCREEN 2022 again offers great and beautiful impressions of the still existing nature, but also shows how fragile it has become and how. And what we can and must do to preserve it! So let‘s look forward to the films, the workshops, specialist seminars and discussions with filmmakers from all over the world! And: Let‘s act responsibly.
Yours Michael Packschies1. Chairman of GREEN SCREEN Festival e.V.

COUNTRY FOCUS FRANCEThis year, the focus is on cultural exchange with France. Thus, for the first time, GREEN SCREEN will focus on France and further expand its function as an international meeting place for animal, nature, environmental and science filmP. Together with arte and the Institut Français, French filmmakers have been invited to submit their productions to this year‘s festival. Thus, numerous French films can be found in this year‘s program - some of them in the original French version. Among them are two premieres of the new series Natura Europa by arte France.A special highlight for schools: one English- and one French-language film in original version with the offer of corresponding materials for the classes.

ARCTIC BLUE: MACHTPOKER IM SCHMELZENDEN EIS Wem gehört der Norden?
The Arctic ice is melting. Here, climate change is progressing faster than anywhere else putting the Arctic at the center of world politics. Littoral states and world powers are fighting for influence. At the center of their interest: access to mineral resources and new transport routes because the melting ice is opening up new and shorter shipping routes. Is a new conflict looming at the North Pole? Johannes Hano travels to the Arctic states under difficult conditions and experiences the harsh nature of the North.

There is a drought in Europe. With drastic consequences for agriculture, forests and our lives. One cause is climate change - but to a large extent this catastrophe is homemade. The theme night shows how wrong decisions and economic constraints are responsible for the drying out of our soils. And in the second part of the event, how international corporations e ploit the „blue gold“ - and why water is becoming scarce in the affected regions.

The film documents how indigenous people scientists and conservationists join in the fight against the logging of Canada‘s last unprotected virgin forests. The conflicts in the forests show the open wounds of colonialism and the exploitation of nature and people by the politically supported timber industry. In the Fairy Creek Valley, there are brutal police operations against peaceful forest protectors and indigenous youth, whose cul-ture and heritage are threatened by the disappearance of the forests.

Many Germans enjoy cheap meat - rarely have they spent less money on food. To understand the conditions under which beef is produced in South America, the team travels to Brazil - one of the largest meat producers in the internatio-nal market. But while strict environmental standards apply to farmers in the EU, cheap meat is still produced in Brazil at the expense of people, animals and the environment.

Everyone thinks they know one inhabitant of our forests - and yet hardly anyone gets to see him: the badger. Because the night hunter sleeps the day below ground. DÉMOCRATIES ANIMALES Le chef consulte (Mitbestimmung im Tierreich)
When necessity is the law in the wilderness, cooperation becomes indispensable. In Africa, among the most hierarchical animal societies, the chief consults with mem-bers of his group before taking action. Each species proceeds in its own way to make its point of view heard by the leader. Wild dogs sneeze, baboons walk in a certain direction, elephants growl and meerkats scream. What if democracy had been invented by animals?

Their tenacity is the stuff of many Nordic legends, but their sparse tracks have re-mained obliterated until now - wolverines, also called bear martens, are made for life in the extreme regions of the Russian-Finnish borderlands. This film gives the first insight into this mysterious world and shows how Freya, a 3-year-old wolverine mother, tries against all odds to bring her cub through its first year.

Sun, sand and the sea - for us humans, beaches are the epitome of vacation and rela-xation. But beaches are also habitats for animals and plants. Often unnoticed between umbrellas and deck chairs, an amazing microcosm of nature unfolds - if you look clo-sely. The film tells beach stories from the animals‘ point of view - sometimes funny, sometimes dramatic, and always surprising.

What is the link between a remote indigenous community in Borneo and the Tokyo Olympics? This question is explored here. The film captures the beauty of the tropical jungle as well as the millennia-old relationship of the indigenous Dayak people to their forest and finds connections of supply chains, quality labels and sustainability promises in a globalized world. A film about a breathtakingly beautiful landscape in transition.

DIE STORY: DATTELN 4 Totgeburt eines Großprojekts?
In May 2020, the Datteln 4 hard coal-fired power plant went on stream. For some, a climate policy lapse, for others a modern bridge technology‘ into a Co2 neutral aeon. Despite the coal phase-out, politicians tried to save the power plant. The film shows what ails many large-scale projects in Germany: Non-transparent upfront ag-reements, lack of citizen participation, shunting political responsibility to the courts. And it asks who calls the shots when it comes to environmental protection.

Actually, there‘s nothing against persistently beautiful summer weather. And not-hing against a few rainy days either. But more and more often, summer days are turning into droughts. For over 100 years it had disappeared in our country, but after 20 years it is now back: the gray wolf. According to the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation, there are currently 105 wolf packs, 25 wolf pairs, and 13 sedentary individual wolves living in Germany. The big question is: How many wolves can Germany handle? Some see the wolf as the representative of a healthy and pristine environ-ment, for others it is a dangerous and greedy predator.

With its close-ups of insects, this film is an ode to the beauty of nature, but at the same time it names and shames the threat of the massive use of neonicotinoids, so-called „systemic“ insecticides that permeate all plant cells. Since the 1990s, the total insect biomass has shrunk by 75 percent. The rapid decline affects all food chains: Fish and birds can no longer find enough to eat and are becoming fewer and fewer.

Among the little tits, it is quite big - the great tit. It is probably the best-known tit species, but we have never seen the black-and-yellow feathered „common bird“ like this: as an able-bodied acrobat, a social networker and an intelligent communicator that uses its song like a language. Great tits are caring, forward-thinking, daring and above all - highly adaptable. Some even have an „e plorer gene“ that opens up new worlds for them.

The Balkan Peninsula forms the geographical border between the Occident and the Orient. In fact, it is a treasure trove of ecological diversity. This nature series explo-res and links a deep-rooted consciousness between man and nature in places where the sell-out of this heritage has not yet taken place. The result is a poetic filmic journey. Without Balkan clichés, without war, without religious differences. Because nature knows no borders.

Together, elephants and termites create waterholes. This is the remarkable story of the relationship between Africa’s largest and smallest animal and the uni ue waterhole community they support - from the perspective of animal characters that live at toe-nail level of an elephant. THE OCEAN‘S GREATEST FEAST
Every winter South Africa’s east coast sees billions of sardines converge in the big-gest biomass migration on the planet. As they move up the coast, this four miles long shoal faces a range of predators from seals in an ancient colony to Cape gannets launching aerial attacks and hundreds of hungry sharks that corral the sardines into bait balls. A super pod of dolphins arrives, and the sardine numbers are decimated. Everything favours the predators, until the orcas arrive.

UNSERE DÖRFER Niedergang und Aufbruch
The consolidation of farm land has changed the landscapes and villages of North Frisia and other areas. Fields were pooled to create large expanses allowing indus-trialized agriculture. Surfaces were levelled: More than 90,000 km of dead-straight roads were built and 0,000 km of streams were canalized. Today’s dangerous flood waters are considered to be one of the consequences. Hedgerows were cut down to create large expanses of arable farm land. Insects and birds were driven out. In Schleswig Holstein, more than 28,000 km of hedge banks disappeared.

Green hydrogen burns cleanly. The eco-gas is supposed to save the world from glo-bal warming. A kick for climate protection? Or a multi-billion dollars mistake? In fact, the technology is still in its infancy. Far more green electricity is needed to produce it than is currently available. Nevertheless, green hydrogen is considered a miracle cure on the road to climate neutrality. The potential is enormous, but so are the hurdles.

A farmer, of all people, saves the bogs. Water logging is the name of the challenge that Henning Voigt has taken on in the second generation. At Lake Kummerow, the 28-year-old farmer harvests what grows on wet marshlands: cattails, thatch, marsh grasses. And he uses it as heating material. The bog farmer is doing pioneering work and hopes that sustainable farming in harmony with nature will not be a losing proposition.

„I hereby declare the GREEN SCREEN International Wildlife Film Festival open!“. With those words by festival director Dirk Steffens, the five September festival days commence prominently supported by Daniel Guenther, First Minister Schleswig-Holstein and Eckernfoerde citizen, as well as the wildlife filmmaker Jan Haft, a welcome GREEN SCREEN guest. Jan Haft is one of five European wildlife filmmakers contributing to the Arte tv series Natura Europa. He and Arte editor Christian Cools will report on the goals and challenges of such a large-scale production, followed by the world premiere of the opening film Natura Europa - Was ist Wildnis? by Jan Haft.
Tickets will only be available from August, 29 in Direct Sale at the TicketCenter.
NATURA EUROPA - Was ist Wildnis?
Opening Ceremony 2021
NATURA EUROPA - WAS IST WILDNIS? Rural birds are dwindling, our amphibians are in crisis, and we have an „insect die-off“ that, unlike the „forest die-off“ of the 1980s, is not a prediction but a scientifically proven reality. On the other hand, many species thought lost are currently returning, such as the wolf, otter, crane and stork.

OPENING CEREMONYEÖ Wed, 07.09.2022 Beginning: 8:00 p.m.,Admission and champagne reception: 6:30 p.m., Stadthalle
On the festival’s eve, GREEN SCREEN and the Schleswig-Holstein Foundation for Nature Conservation invite you to par-ticipate in the traditional panel discussion Eckernfoerder Gespräche. This year, the topic is wilderness. At first glance, the term appears to be clearly defined. What is wilderness actually and how much of it still exists in Germany? Where lies the importance of wilderness and how much space are we willing to allocate it? This is not only a discussion between nature conservationists and politicians. It has also become a popular topic for farmers, forest managers and nature lovers. The discussion will be emphasized by excerpts from this year‘s opening film What is Wilderness? (Page 146). Next to director Jan Haft, representatives from politics, agriculture and nature conservation are expected on the panel.
During the festival, GREEN SCREEN showcases further events regarding that topic.

GREEN SCREEN wildlife film festival: Not only films with breathtaking images and enlightening information about nature and the necessity of its protection. Festival, that also means meeting and exchange between nature-loving visitors with experts of the wildlife film industry. With Film & Talk, GREEN SCREEN offers two screenings with in-depth information beyond the talks with filmma-kers following numerous screenings. Here, the subject matter of the film, the special circumstances of filming and production are explained in detail by a panel of experts. Questions from the audience are explicitly encouraged. Please allow an additional half hour for these events. Thursday, 08.09., 8:00 p.m, Stadthalle: Naturwunder Gemüsegarten – Die große Welt der kleinen TiereFriday, 09. 09., 8:00 p.m., Stadthalle: Im Einsatz für den Planeten – Die Artenretter
Together with GREEN SCREEN visitors, birders and Gut zu Vögeln podcasters Antonia Coenen and Philipp Juranek do what they love most: Go bird watching. Everyone is invited to join them in exploring Eckernfoerde‘s birdlife. There is much to see and tell. In their podcast Gut zu Vögeln, Antonia and Philipp have been trying to get to the bottom of their deep affection for animals - Antonia from her city balcony in Cologne, Philipp in his wildlife garden in Bran-denburg. In each episode, the two humorously feature a bird species - its song, behaviour, „jizz“ and its recurrence in music, art and pop culture.
Bring: sports footwear, binoculars and a water bottle as well as rain or sun protection, depending on weather condi-tions.

This year’s Honorary Award of the German ocumentary Film Prize goes to Werner Herzog for his lifetime oeuvre. The 79 years old director, producer and author is one of the most important and influential filmmakers in the world. His films are considered densely narrated masterpieces that blur the line between fiction and documen-tary. Werner Herzog is internationally one of the most renowned directors and producers and since 1 2 has directed more than 30 documentaries for cinema and television.GREEN SCREEN will screen Werner Herzog‘s film White Diamond in the presence of the producer and camera team Klaus and Annette Scheurich:In this film, Graham Dorrington follows the dream of the late documentary filmmaker Dieter Plage who died in 1 3 in a tragic fall from orrington‘s predecessor of an aeronautic vessel. Having witnessed this accident at close quarters and driven by guilt and a childlike dream of soaring above the treetops of the jungle, the engineer sets off for Guyana with Werner Herzog and an upgraded mini eppelin.

FRENCH CONNECTION
For the first time, GREEN SCREEN brings together German and French film producers, filmmakers and editors to spark a new dynamic for co-produc-tions and partnerships in the production of nature and wildlife films. Bina-tional cooperation offers unique opportunities, but also poses special legal, financial and creative challenges for the partners. Nicolas Zunino and Tho-mas Weidenbach will chair the seminar. In addition to Claudia Schwab and Christian Cools, other experts from the industry are expected to attend the seminar which will be simultaneously translated into French.

SEMINAR 2P2 Fri, 09.09. 10:00 a.m., Seminar Room (Gym)
WILDLIFE FILM TODAY New sustainability standards and their implementation possibilities in wildlife film production
Green Motion is the name of a new label mandatory for many productions and subsidies starting January 1st, 2022. But what does it take to obtain the label? For whom is it of interest? Which subsidies are tied to the label? Which criteria are difficult or impossible to fulfil? Where are the hitches in the CO2 calculator? What role can those responsible for nature and environmental documentaries play in the transformation of the media industry?
Korina Gutsche has many years of practical experience as a consultant in the media industry and reports on the relevance, the status quo, and the challenges in imple-menting effective climate protection measures.
Moritz Mayerle has been supervising current film productions for Marco Polo Film AG within the framework of the 100 Green Productions and of the Real Lab. He shares his best-practice experiences for the implementation specifically with regard to wildlife films.
Dirk Steffens reports: What are the guidelines and requirements for broadcasters? Are they responsible or the producers?
This seminar will be simultaneously translated into English.

Everyone hopes to never end up in a medical emergency situation where he/she or someone else in the team is in danger of serious harm. But what if worst case happens and you are suddenly confronted with an emergency situation yourself?
If you are in remote areas far away from urban structures you will quickly realize that the knowledge obtained in “standard” first aid courses is not suf-ficient. What do you do then? Martin Eickhoff has many years of professional experience in national and international emergency medicine and has been working as a trainer and con-sultant in various national and international medical fields for more than 18 years (www.pro-medi.org).
Just like all her colleagues, Rosie Koch often finds herself in remote areas and not infrequently in dicey or downright dangerous situations. When recently finding herself confronted by another medical emergency deep in the jungle, she once again fervently wished she had been better prepared.
This seminar will be simultaneously translated into English.
