SUSTAINABILITY

With the global population climbing to more than 9 billion by 2050, the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) predicts that food production will need to increase by 70% in order to feed the world.1 A large portion of that growth will be centered in developing countries, where natural resources may be scarce and production methods inefficient.

Moreover, as global economies develop, food consumption patterns change. The shift in demand for protein, recognized as essential for growth and good health, is expected to rise, placing additional strains on resources and the environment. Now more than ever, food companies need to develop strategies for sustainable sources of protein to accommodate growing global demand.

Sustainability is a key focus at DuPont, with active programs aimed at reducing the environmental footprint of our value chains while developing more sustainable products. One example of this commitment is the recently completed life cycle assessment of DuPont™ Danisco®

isolated soy protein (ISP), which compared the carbon footprint, land and water use of ISP against other common protein sources.

SOY PROTEIN HAS THE SMALLEST CARBON FOOTPRINT COMPARED TO ANIMAL SOURCESApplied to food production, carbon footprint refers to the amount of carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and other greenhouse gas emissions released into the environment as a result of growing, processing, transporting and disposing of food products. According to FAO estimates, emissions from crop and livestock production increased by 14% between 2001 and 2011, mainly in developing countries due to expansion of agricultural outputs.2 Changes in the earth’s climate, such as shifting seasons, temperatures and rainfall patterns, have been attributed to a dramatic increase in greenhouse gases. To mitigate the detrimental effects of these high emission levels on the environment,

many companies around the world are instituting measures to reduce their carbon footprint.

CO2e is the standard unit that expresses the global warming impact of various greenhouse gases as carbon dioxide equivalents. The CO2e of DuPont™ Danisco® isolated soy protein is extremely low at 2.4 kg (see Figure 1). Clearly, our ISP is the lowest producer of greenhouse gases in this range.

In fact, replacing just 1 kg of animal-based protein with our ISP can reduce CO2e by 14 to 176 kg (see Figure 2).

WATER AND LAND USE FOOTPRINTS ARE ALSO SMALL FOR SOY PROTEIN Although water resources vary from country to country, our international trade practices make water use a global issue. Fresh water in sufficient quantities and adequate quality is a fundamental worldwide need, yet clean water is a scarce resource in many regions

of the world, and the demand has already exceeded availability in some agricultural areas.

About 69% of global freshwater withdrawals are used for agriculture and related food production.3 Blue water footprint describes the amount of surface and ground water that is used throughout the supply chain of a product. In the context of protein, our ISP has a very small blue water footprint compared to animal-based proteins (see Figure 3).

In a similar way, land suited for crops and pasture has been decreasing as populations grow and urbanization increases. Pressure on land resources is not evenly distributed, with much of the world’s remaining agricultural areas found in tropical regions having high biodiversity. About 80% of global agricultural land is devoted to raising animals and growing their feed, making high yielding crops a priority for the remainder.4

Soy is a high yielding crop that uses limited amounts of fertilizer or irrigation water. The land use footprint for our ISP is the smallest,

measured at 7 square meters per year (7 m2/y) to yield 1 kg protein - compared to 19 m2y for whey and up to 1,311 m2y for beef protein (see Figure 4).

The sustainability benefits of DuPont™ Danisco® isolated soy protein are clear. With a carbon footprint that is 8 to 80 times lower than animal-based proteins, our soy proteins are produced without the energy loss, methane and nitrous oxide emissions associated with animals, especially ruminants. Land use and water footprints are also exceptionally low.
