Character comparison

• In this task I will look at how our most seen character compares to the same type of character from a different film within the same genre.

Page 3: Evaluation task 2

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?The difference between these two characters are minimal, the biggest differences are the outfits that they wear and the time that the films are set in. These two characters are both cold killers as you can see from these snapshots. Both snapshots were taken just after they murdered someone and neither of them show any form of emotion be it sympathy for those they just shot or happiness for completing the mission.

Lets talk business.

• Alex plays the character that collects the gun and murders the two drug dealers, his character is portrayed as being a cold hearted killer which is represented when he shoots the two drug dealers and shows no remorse or any form of emotion. This is much the same as the shootings shown in the Godfather films. The killers in both movies show little emotion towards the fact that they have just taken a mans life. He also bears some resemblance to the killing of the women in Bad Boys II, the killer kills the women without a second thought and shows no emotion after the crime had been committed. All the killers I have just mentioned take killing as if it is an everyday thing.

Is it normal?

• Alex is a very typical character of crime thrillers and this is shown by the fact that in almost every film for this genre there is a character who kills without remorse. This is proof that our killer is a typical convention of crime thrillers. • Our Killer also possesses the typical qualities of a cold hearted killer,

he is efficient, aggressive and wears outfits that blend in. I will talk about each of these qualities separately. • There are three perfect examples of cold hearted killers and that is

the Godfather movies, the Scarface series and the Bad Boys films.

Quality 1 (efficiency)

• The killer in our piece is efficient, the efficiency of our killer is portrayed by the montage sequence. We show him holding the gun and within thirty seconds Alex will enter the room portraying the idea that he gets the mission and will complete it very quickly. He is also efficient in the way of he enters the room shoots the characters and then leaves with the drugs. • His comparison on this quality is the Bad Boys killer. He kills and

leaves and this is the same as the Bad Boys because they enter do their job and leave again as quickly as possible.

Page 7: Evaluation task 2

Quality 2 (aggressive)

• This the most common convention of a crime thriller killer. • Our character is aggressive and we can see this in the way that he

enters the building. He kicks the door in showing he is not messing around and that he has an aggressive side which may help him through his career. He is also seen as aggressive because he shoots the dealers without question. • The comparison for this is Scarface because he is seen to be

aggressive when he is shooting his enemies through a wall it is blind rage that makes him do that.

The costume

• The costumes that our killer wears is not garish or anything that will make him stand out it is in fact the complete opposite. He wears clothes that make him blend in and become one of the general public. This helps him not to be captured and contributes to his efficiency. • Many crime thrillers will not have their main killer dressed weirdly or

in anything that will make him stand out although generally they wear suits to show their professionalism.
