More than two-thirds of U.S. adults are overweight or obese.
About a quarter of 2-5 year olds and one-third of school-age children (including
adolescents) are
overweight or obese in the
U.S.
Most Americans consume more than twice the daily recommended amount of sugar. It's not the sugar you add to your coffee that is bad.
There is much more sugar in your processed food than you know.
In fact, many companies add extra sugar to make the products more palatable. (We're looking at you,
Prego!)
Why do they do it?
"Our research supports the theory that high-fat/high-sugar foods stimulate the brain in the same way that drugs do," said Joseph Schroeder, director of Connecticut College's behavioral neuroscience program. "It may explain why
some people can't resist these foods despite the fact that they know they are bad for them."
In other words, sugar is as addictive as some drugs.
Even seemingly healthy foods can have a large amount of added sugar.
Here are some examples:
Craisins, per serving: 140 calories. Calories from sugar: 104. (74% of calories areFrom sugar)
Fruit Roll-ups, per serving: 50 calories. Calories from sugar: 28. (56% of calories areFrom sugar)
To compare: Reese's Pieces have 234 calories, 97 calories from sugar. (41%)
Candy has fewer calories from sugar than many of these "healthy" foods!!
What is the answer? How can we stop eating
so much sugar?
On nutritional labels, food manufacturers are not required to
separate naturally occurring
sugars from added sugars on the
nutrition label. (Although the FDA
would like to change that).
However, if you look at the ingredients list, you can see where sugar comes in the list.
If it's first or second, bingo!
Any other ingredient that ends in "ose", like fructose or dextrose, is another added sugar. Here is a list to watch out for.
It will take time to get over eating so much sugar, and you will have to do it slowly,
because it's as hard a habit to break as
nicotine.
Be patient with yourself, and allow
yourself to be angry with manufacturers
that created this problem.
