Is NFT better in hydroponics or aquaponics?

Most aquaponic growers do not use Nutrient Film Technique

(NFT).

NFT is almost entirely a hydroponic technique.

Why is that?

...if you have any solids in your NFT,

Well...

like you do in an aquaponic system,

they get trapped in your root zone and begin to

decompose.

This leads to root health issues.

Why?

In NFT systems, most of the root mass is surrounded

by open air.

Only a thin layer of solution runs across the tip of the roots.

When that thin layer of solution accumulates

solids and decomposes,

it raises the temperature of the solution and the air

surrounding the full root mass.

This is important because...

Oxygen is less soluble at higher temperatures.

This leads to challenged roots & anaerobic zones.

All of which are bad for plant health.

In hydroponics, solids are not a problem.

Therefore, most NFT growers avoid aquaponics and just grow

hydroponically.
