Reflections by Dr Simon Duffy founder of Inclusion Glasgow
at its 20th Birthday Conference: 20:20 Vision
A Visionfor Inclusion
• Institutions
• Segregation
• Exclusion
• Abuse
Inspiration can sometimes come from reacting against evil
Inclusion, before inclusion… there’s always more to the story
• Inspiration
• Experimentation
Imagining citizenship as another way to think about ‘services’
• Power
• Community
Putting the band together… everyone needs a bit of luck
Stumbling towards a model of personalised support
• Not ‘brokerage’
• Trust in people
• Trust in community
• Sticking with it
Shared management…
• You don’t need to do everything yourself
• It’s a partnership
Success and heartache
Trying to pass on what we’ve learned along the way
Growing, changing and splitting up
Coming back from time to time…
An interesting boring graph
• 20 Years - Neighbours Inc (USA)
• 20 Years - Quality Lifestyle Support (Australia)
• 23 Years - Pameijer, Gaandeweg (Netherlands)
• 24 Years - Durham (Canada)
• 25 Years - Spectrum (Canada)
• 25 Years - Community Living (Australia)
We are not alone…
• How can we rescue the welfare state from its enemies and from itself?
• How can we encourage citizenship and a more local welfare state?
• How can we restore community organisations to their proper role?
What I’m up to now
Times are tough
Westminster has imposed cruel cuts on disabled people and local government is under press to cut social care. But progress is real
Keep the faith…
10 years ago at Inclusion’s10th Anniversary Conference Nicola Sturgeon was depute leader of the SNP at Holyrood
Change can happen
