Water Nethravathi is the main river of the district. The other important rivers are - Gurupura,

Payaswini, Kumaradhara Apart from the existing rivers and rainfall, the

district has extensive irrigation system using groundwater, groundwater from reservoirs and canals

Tourism• Mangaladevi Temple - Built in

10th century ,is situated about 3 km from Mangaluru. The city owes the origin of its name to its deity “the goddess Mangala”

• Alekan Falls - An attractive waterfall noted for its picturesque locale; located near Bale Kallu Gudda placed on one of the highest altitude regions in the district

• Dharmasthala - A beautiful sacred island formed by the magnificent river Netravathi, is famous for 800 year old Manjunatha temple and the Sri Gomateshwara statue built in 1973 which is carved out of a single stone to a height of 14 meter

• Ullal - An enchanting beach marked by abundant trees ,situated 10 Km from Mangaluru is famous for historic locations like Someshwara temple, Summer Sand Beach resorts, Queen Abbakka’s fort and The Sayed Mohammed Shenphul Madani Mosque

Infrastructure Readiness

Mangalore Special Economic Zone LimitedMangalore Special Economic Zone (SEZ) is one of India’s successful SEZs with investments exceeding Rs. 13000 crores. Spread over 1620 acres in phase I, MSEZ is designed as a smart business city that provides quality lifestyle to its citizens.  

Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board (KIADB)

IT Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in the coastal district of Dakshina Kannada developed by KIADB of 162 acres. Infosys Technologies, India’s second largest IT services company, has secured an additional 42 acres of land for its proposed facility at the IT SEZ. 

Newly Developed IT Cluster by Keonics Located in Derebail spread across 3.25 acres land, for mixed use land development.40% of the area for IT workspace- IT Parks, EoUs and 60% for Commercial, Residential and other Social Infrastructures.

Marine Biotech Park (INR 120 Crore/USD 20 mn) to be established in Mangaluru which is under conceptualization stage. KBITS is the implementing Agency.

• Investments in IT are gaining momentum in the district and the presence of major IT companies has seen a constant rise

• 2 Operational, 2 Notified and 1 Formally Approved IT SEZ in the district

• 29 Software Technology parks exported US$ 181-millioin in 2008-09

• District is proposed to have 40% area for IT workforce

• Dedicated petrochemical SEZ with a proposed area of 3,985 acres with 1,800 acres already possessed.
