Is the vacuum cord in good shape?

Are there loose parts?

Step 1: Equipment Safety Check

Is your vacuum cleaner a safe and efficient tool for your job? If not, or if you are unsure, get an estimate for repair.

Step 2: Equipment Check - Underside

Is your vacuum ready to do work for you?

Is The Brush Turning It’s important to check and see!

Is The Brush Wrapped In Debris? Debris can clog your vacuum brush and leave you wondering why it won’t pick up dirt.

Are The Belts In Working Order? A broken belt will prevent the brush from turning, preventing your vac from picking up.

Step 3: Air-flow Check

Will your vacuum make your effort show?

Is the bag full? Check regularly and replace when 3/4 full.

Is there debris clogging a portal? Check your motor and vacuum fan periodically to ensure there are no blockages.

Is a hose clogged? Hold the hose up to the light and see if it shines through. If not, clear that blockage!

Step 4: Look Before You Sweep

Walk the carpet area to be vacuumed and check for any obstacles.

Do you need to move anything to do a thorough job?

Are there wet areas that will ruin bags or harm the vacuum?

Step 5: Last-Minute Pick Up

If it will cost you time later, or might damage your equipment,

pick it up first!

Vacuums can be damaged by clips, coins and other hard, small objects. Survey the area for any small debris and pick it up.

Remove anything else large enough to clog a tube and slow your efforts. If you are unsure whether or not an item will clog a vacuum, pick it up. Better safe than sorry!

Step 6: Ready? Set. Go!

Move at a moderate, steady pace.

Allow the brush/beater bar to do the work.

Approach furniture legs and baseboards slowly to avoid damage.

Vacuum in a pattern and change directions every other time.

Step 7: Store Your Equipment In A Safe Place.

Cords and vacuums left unattended for even a brief moment create trip hazards.

Report any needed repairs. Do not use a machine in need of repair.

Professionals keep their machines clean. Wipe your vacuum and clean away marks.

Your equipment deserves the same level of care as the building you are using it for!

Step 8: How Do You Feel?

If you have pain or numbness after vacuuming, consult with your supervisor.

Don’t ignore pain or unusual fatigue. They are important signs.

You may need to use a different technique, or a piece of equipment better suited for your height.

Choosing the right equipment for the operator is an important

part of the buying process!
