developing strategies for diabetes prevention,
glycemic control, and early/regular eye

early diagnosis and treatment can potentially
eliminate blindness due to diabetic retinopathy
II. ESTIMATED BURDEN OF DISEASE
The most effective method for the treatment of
diabetic retinopathy, and prevention of the new
blood vessel formation that ultimately leads to
blindness, is photocoagulation by laser
Vision may also be restored with the time
consuming and expensive vitrectomy
