Hyperlipidemia is the medical term for elevated levels of lipids in the bloodstream. Lipids are essentially fats and include cholesterol, cholesterol esters, triglycerides and phospholipids. They are part of molecules in the bloodstream called lipoproteins. When lipid levels become elevated, they can begin to cause health problems. For example, without treatment high lipid levels can cause blockages in the arteries, a condition called atherosclerosis. These blockages significantly increase the risk of experiencing a stroke or heart attack !
