Fatigue, Bloating Weight Gain, Cravings, DepressionAches & PainsAre Food Sensitivities To Blame??Laura Bartron, B.S., NC, CPT©2015

G.I. Immune Defense Team

Gut Inflammation In a normal healthy gut,

the line of defense is effective & functions properly, making sure nothing harmful gets through the gut & into your body (liver & bloodstream)

However, chronic inflammation of your gut impairs your gut lining making it more permeable & reactive

Poor quality diet Excess sugar &

alcohol Food sensitivities Toxins: pesticides,

chlorine, Splenda Infections Stress → ↓ sIgA Meds: antibiotics,

acid blockers, steroids, NSAIDs

Silent Inflammation Gut inflammation &

abnormal reactions to wholesome (often

difficult to digest) foods can remain hidden for years without any GI symptoms

Common Symptoms of Food Sensitivities Fatigue or sleepiness after meals Weight gain/weight loss resistance Mental fog, anxiety or depression Headaches/migraines Acne, eczema, other skin problems Joint or muscle pain Bloating, constipation, diarrhea, gas bloating, reflux, coughing, & mouth sores Food cravings Wheezing & sinus issues -Usually unresponsive to traditional

therapies-

Food Sensitivity Spectrum Food Allergy – adverse reaction

to food involving the immune system Least common, most

dangerous Immediate reaction, IgE

mediated Easy to diagnose

Food Intolerance or “delayed food allergy” IgG, IgM, C3 & C4 mediated,

affect many cells in different ways

Wide variety of often low-grade symptoms that appear 45 minutes to days after ingestion

Often undiagnosed or misdiagnosed

Food Sensitivity Spectrum Food sensitivity does not

always involve the immune system Non-immune mediated

reactions won’t be picked up on antibody tests

Can produce digestive symptoms

Lactose intolerance (enzyme deficiency)

Food Addiction Often driven by

neurochemical addiction via dopamine & opiate receptors after eating processed foods (sugar, wheat)

Or low serotonin/cravings

Food Sensitivities & Weight Loss Resistance Weight loss diets that

include foods you are sensitive to will not yield good results matter how much you exercise &/or restrict calories

Inflammation disrupts metabolic hormones, inhibits fat burning & causes water retention

Stress response Cravings, especially carbs

(insulin resistance) Addictive overeating

Why Are Food Sensitivities on the Rise?

<Breast feeding & vaginal births – hygiene hypothesis Infants receive lion’s share of flora from mother at birth/nursing Sterile environments

Vaccines (best after 1 year old) GMOs (genetically modified foods) Processed foods; natural foods with prebiotic fiber vs.

preservatives, artificial flavor, coloring, sweetener, pesticides, antibiotics

Repeated consumption of a limited number of foods Improper digestion or enzyme deficiency Dysbiosis Leaky gut syndrome (LGS) Stress Overworked immune system from daily toxin exposure Genetics (Asian, African ) – no universally safe foods Better science, more accurate diagnosis

Stress, Digestion, Immunity

Leaky Gut Syndrome (LGS) LGS is often part of the food

sensitivity continuum & may be the cause of many seemingly unrelated symptoms: low energy, IBS, weight gain, joint pain, migraines, thyroid disease, skin or autoimmune conditions

Gut lining is selective barrier... When damaged things that

normally can’t pass through, are now be able to…

Proteins like gluten, bacteria, undigested foods particles & toxic waste, which then evoke the immune system

Contributing Factors: Allergenic foods causing

inflammation of cells Incompletely digested food

proteins Gluten, dairy, soy (lectins,

phytates) Excess sugar/processed food,

pesticides Alcohol Stress Medications

Antibiotics, steroids, aspirin, acid blockers irritate gut lining & cause bacterial imbalance

Heavy metals, yeast or bacterial overgrowth

Dysbiosis Imbalance between

beneficial & harmful species of bacteria in gut

Optimal balance is about 85% “good bacteria” & 15% “bad” bacteria

Dysbiosis contributes to allergies, IBS, LGS, vitamin deficiency, auto-intoxication, cravings, weight gain, skin & joint problems

Latest research shows certain strains of unfriendly bacteria are consistently found in overweight individuals They alter the way we store fat & respond to hunger hormones

Other studies6,7 have shown that certain bacteria found in your gut can produce insulin resistance & weight gain by triggering chronic low-grade inflammation in your body

TOP 7 PROBIOTIC KILLERS Antibiotics

Consuming too much sugar & refined carbs

Chlorine: water, Sucralose

GMO Foods

Low stomach acid

Emotional Stress

Exposure to Toxins & Pesticides

Restoring Bacterial Balance Limit sugar,

Sucralose & highly processed foods

Choose organic: no GMOs, antibiotics, pesticides, etc.

Consume fiber, probiotic/prebiotic foods & supplements

Strengthen & Feed Good Bacteria

Probiotics Benefits of probiotics

Support immune system (mucosal immunity)

Improve digestive function & mineral absorption

Prevent & aid in healing allergies/leaky gut

Improve skin health acne & dry red flaking skin

Kills candida & bad bacteria Enhanced synthesis of vitamin

B12, calcium & vitamin K2 Support digestion of difficult

substances like gluten and lactose (sugars, starch, fiber)

Production of short chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which increase mitochondrial function & insulin sensitivity (fiber)

Probiotic Supplements Choose multi-strain product for

general purposes Well known, trusted brand Long shelf life Can survive stomach acid so

that it reaches the small intestine Depends on strains

Viable through end of shelf life Supplement to restore

balance for 3-6 months

Ongoing use if high sugar, GMO, processed foods diet or foreign travel , antibiotic use or digestive issues

DFH Probiotics Probiotic Synergy Advanced BIO-tract

Probiosphere provides:Blend 5 billion cfu L. acidophilus B. bifidum L. casei L. rhamnosus (L.

reuteri; B. breve; B. longum; S. thermophilus)

PaleoFiber Combination of soluble

“Paleo” fibers from fruits, veggies, roots, seeds, & tree extracts with added friendly bacteria & prebiotics

Lactobacillus acidophilus La-14 (7.5 billion CFU/serving)† & bifidobacteria longum BB536 (500 million CFU/serving)

Helpful with all GI issues, hormone balance, detox, & reduction of appetite, glucose, cholesterol & inflammation

Elimination Diet Remove allergens Keep weight & food

symptoms diary for 1-3 weeks

May experience headache, muscle pain & fatigue 1st 3 days

Eat organic as much as possible- avoid additives

Reintroduce foods 1 at a time every 3 days by eating challenge food 1-3 times that day on empty stomach

Pulse Test Easy, inexpensive &

effective way to identify foods or substances to which one may be allergic, sensitive or intolerant

Stress caused by intolerant foods accelerates the pulse rate

Foods raising the resting pulse over 12 beats per minute above the morning resting pulse indicate a suspected allergen & should be eliminated for 3 months

Test results Rotation plan Consultation Starts at $200

ALCAT Testing Functional response test that

identifies non-IgE mediated reactions to foods & chemicals that don’t fall within conventional definition of allergy

Mobile blood draw service available

Rotation Diet Foods are rotated so that

you eat a food (or food family) only once every 4 days

If you identify or suspect a sensitivity to wheat, you would rotate wheat-containing foods in your diet every fourth day

It is believed that by decreasing the consumption of problematic foods by rotating them, the symptoms associated with these foods can be reduced

Eat Clean for Optimal Health Most processed foods

contain 1 or more ingredients or additives that can challenge gut health/overall health

Eat organic foods whenever possible

Minimize refined sugar, grains & alcohol

Follow seasonal, anti-inflammatory diet including fermented foods

Avoid unnecessary meds

Anti-inflammatory Diet Antioxidants:
