• 2 out of every 5 people have medical cards
• Over 1.1m presentations to our 33 Emergency Departments
• In 2010 we treated over 1.3 million patients in our hospitals
• 10,000 older people received a Home Care Package

• Over 11 million home help hours were provided to 54,011 clients
• 74,418 babies delivery safely in 2010 -26% by caesarean
• 17,249 patients received orthodontic treatment
• GP out of hours services dealt with almost 900,000 contacts

• There were 5,727 children in care in Ireland, the majority of which (89%) were cared for by foster carers. and 8% are in residential care and the legal fees for this alone cost us in the region of 18 million
• Life expectancy for men is 0.7 years greater than the 2007 EU average (76.8), while for women it 0.5 years higher (81.6).
• Of the 108,000 HSE employees 48% are employed in primary and community services, 45% work in acute hospitals 3% work in national corporate services such as finance, procurement, HR etc, and the remaining 4% are in other service areas such as the National Cancer Control Programme, pre hospital care services.

• Some real progress has been made
• In 2010 over 1.3 million patients were treated in hospital.
• This represents a 4% increase over 2009 i.e. almost 50,000 more patients treated while reducing bed capacity by 1%

• A major theme of the HSE’s Service Plan 2011 is the implementation of the national clinical programmes
• For 2011 we are budgeted to reduce our costs by €680m while doing everything not to impact on the front line

• The number of people over the age of 65 is projected to increase from over 500,000 now to over 1.3million in the next 30 years

• Primary Care Teams - provide services for over 2.8 million people, with 2,615 HSE staff members and over 1,300 GPs participating.

The effects of alcohol accounts for:
• over 10% of all general inpatient hospital costs,
• 14% of psychiatric hospital costs,
• 7% of GP costs
• Up to 30% of emergency department costs.

• For 2007, the total costs imposed by alcohol on the public health care system were estimated at €1.2 billion (CMO 2010)
• That is more than we spent on mental health services last year !!!!
